    need some drag brake setup ideas

    my friend just bought a mid 80s santana tandem, frame looks to be fillet brazed steel. 140mm rear spacing with 6 speed freewheel. 48 spoke suzue hubs. suntour power ratchet shifters. he did not like the way the canti brakes worked so we are swapping to mini v brakes. i need some help on routing the controls for the drum brake. the original setup is 1 lever controlling the cantis and one on the drum. we are switching to a more traditional 1 lever for the front brake and one for the rear. my friend is not against removing the drum but i think it would be nice to have. my idea was to let the stoker control the drum brake. any idea on prices? he paid 375, just wondering if he got a deal or not. i am not familiar with tandem prices

    Sounds like a very nice frame that could very serviceable and could be upgraded in time. The most usual drag brake setting uses a thumb lever on one of the captains- bar-end though is sounds like the bike is using thumb shifters. A couple of options would be to use Paul's Thumbies which allows you to mount a thumb-shifter on one of the bars. You can put it near he stem on the captain's bars or the stoker's. You could also use just the bar-end lever on the stoker bars.

    Actually it is more likely that the Santana is using down-tube shifters. In any case... I don't know... it could be just me, but, I don't see the point of going to a vintage source to score a deal, and then spend $$ bringing the thing into the 21st Century. Canti's are just fine. There will not be any increase in performance going to mini-V's. But... if it really was a deal breaker, IMO the move would be to go to full size V''s. of which excellent performance can be obtained in the ~$20 price point (Shimano) and obtaining long pull hooded levers (Tektro) also in the ~$20 price arena. For almost no money at all (~$10), one can get a pair of Sun Race thumb shifters to control the drag brake. No need to $pend for Thumbies and still have to $pend more on top of that to get bar end shifters to mount to the Thumbies.

    My assumption was that the suntour shifters were barbers so he would have to find a location other then the captain's barbers. A fillet brazed Santana would be a fine bike to upgrade.

    On our Co-Motion, we installed a bar-end shifter with a Paul Thumbie on the Stokers Bar for our drag brake.

    no down tube bosses. mini vs offer better stopping power than cantis in my experience. we are only spending about 200 for parts, that includes cables, bar tape, chains, and a splurge for fancy bottle cages which are 50 bucks we might just go for the drum brake delete

    Cheap way to save more than a pound of weight.

    If you're not doing prolonged descents, are not a heavier team, and not doing loaded touring, you likely don't need a drag brake.

    Also, because they don't make the Arai drum brakes anymore, you likely can sell it for enough to cover a fair portion of the cost of the project.

    reptilezs, when you get it all cleaned-up we'd love to see a picture. One other thing I've seen on the forum is the steer tube size, is this one 1"? I think Santana has recommended those with original 1" forks to change them out and have a chrome fork available.

    On the Drag-brake, we have two sets of wheels one with the drag and one without. We typically use the non-drag wheel set but if we are heading into a ride with significant hills we will switch out the wheels. We built both sets with Dyads so they interchange very nicely. Realizing this is someone else's bike you don't have say in that.

    I hope they are able to ride and enjoy the bike with the knowledge it is a frame that could be upgraded down the road.

    I have a late '90s Arriva with XTR and 105 STI shifters (modified from bar ends) and stock canti brakes. I have a thumb controlled drag brake that is on the capt. bars close to the stem. We are a large team >400lbs and love the drag brake. I will say that the stock cantis stop us pretty well so the drag break is really only used as intended for slowing decents or if I haven't clean the rims in a while and I'm trying to avoid the squeaking. It is also handy to use the drag break as a parking break when stopped on a slope. As far as the weight goes, when you're a big team on a 45+lb bike the weight of the brake isn't a big deal.

    Just refitted a Santana Elan here and mounted the drag control on the captain's stem using a Suntour thumbie ( half ratchet)... replaced the stock dual pull levers with Tektros which manage those Shimano cantis very well and the braking is very good.

    The original set up was to have both cantis connected to the dual lever and the drag brake on the other.

    Santana makes a very nice tandem and 375 is a great deal when you consider what a new custom tandem is worth.
