Rental Vehicle Recommenation
Hi, I will be renting a vehicle this weekend to pickup a demo tandem at Calfee. Does anyone have a recommendation on what vehicle to rent that will make moving the tandem the easiest (taking off both wheels is not a problem). I will only have 1 passenger and two suitcases.
Thanks,
JH

Depends on how far you're going. When I needed to bring our tandem out to the starting point for a 200 mile bike tour with my daughter last year, it was actually cheaper for me to rent a 1-way 10 foot Ryder truck than a minivan or pickup truck to go the same distance.

Sport utilities will work or longer hatchbacks may work, we've used cars with a fold-down rear seat. You need enough length to get the wheelbase in and be careful threading the bike in through the trunk. We have a 2005 Acura TSX with a fold-down rear seat and we are able to get the bike in with the wheels, pedals and seats off (this includes the stoker bars with the captain seat). Our tandem fits well in our Honda CR-v so the small or mid-sizes SUV would probably work well.

A mini-van is the choice that will definitely work. It works best with a Saris rack or equivalent.

Minivan - look at the price for renting a Dodge/Chrysler minivan - it is lower than renting many cars - shopping around required; and fuel costs are low too. The last one we rented returned better than 25mpg average for the whole trip, and hit 28mpg on one tank (Interstate, cruise control, tail wind).
