    Another Disc Brake Thread - Preparing for D2R2

    Last year Sue and survived D2R2 on our old Ibis Cousin It with a Shimano CX-75 caliper and the 200 mm Ice-Tech rotor. For this year I have two concerns: First, the potential for melting the Ice Tech rotor has me very nervous. Conditions were ideal last year and I really didn't have to use the brakes much but you never know what this year will bring. Second, I don't feel like I have enough take-up on the lever (Ultegra 9 speed) to provide me with the best possible braking. This is somewhat exacerbated by a now slightly warped rotor.

    From what I can glean off the latest posts the TRP Spyre works but I'd like to be sure that it really does use less cable than the Shimano - has anyone compared them directly? Also, according to the website they only support up to a 180 mm rotor. Can I use my existing mount adapter for the Shimano caliper and stick with a 200 mm rotor? What rotor should I try?

    Hydraulic is another option although I worry about boiling off the fluid, plus they are more complex of course.

    Any suggestions/comments/feedback would be much appreciated.

    TRP will ship a rotor up to 180mm, which is basically what they mean by "supported". They do also have available a 203mm IS/PM adapter for using their calipers with that rotor size.

    BTW, check your ICE rotor spec. Is it 200mm or 203mm? Me thinks the latter. If your current adapter is a little short (pads run below the steel brake surface on the ICE Tech rotor) then you can simply add some spacers between the caliper mount and adapter, or buy the adapter from TRP (actually, Tektro the parent company has it).

    Good to hear of another tandem team doing D2R2! We are signed up for it this year, it will be our first time. Stoker is getting worried about what we're in for. Are you doing the full 118miles? As for brakes, I wasn't concerned about that. We have BB7s with Avid rotors, I've never had an issue with them. I'm more curious about what tires to use. I was thinking of going for some 26x1.5 slick tires. Also planning to get a new cassette for some lower gears. We usually have a low cog of 28t (28 in the front too), thinking of putting on a 32t or 34t.

    Will be awesome to see another tandem out there. Yes we are doing the full route (at least that's the plan so far). I posted a ride report after last years event here: Tandem Ride Report - D2R2

    For tires we ran 26 x2.1 semi slick Ritchy Speedmax at 60 psi. They were perfect. There is very little flat road and I never had the feeling our tires were too big or slow. You'll appreciate the traction on the dirt climbs and you will love the extra volume on the descents.

    For gearing we ran 54/39/26 up front and 11/32 in the back. We used the 26x32 a couple of times when everyone else was walking. With the 28 up front I would definitely go with a 32 or 34 in the rear. 1:1 is OK for singles on D2R2 but not tandems unless you are wickedly strong (and light).
