    XTR DI2 question - keep it simple.....please. ;-)

I've read all the posts concerning the new XTR DI2 and "would it work on my tandem?"

I'm more confused now, that before I read the posts.

We have a Pinarello Tandem currently running 10-speed. XTR rear derailleur. Cassette XT 11-32. Front chain rings 28-39-52.

I'm interested in going to electronic shifting (the new XTR DI2 9050).

Can I do this? What would I have to change?

That being said, we still need our LOW LOW LOW gear... 28 front, 32 rear as we climb the big Cols in France and Italy regularly.

More pics of our tandem here.

I need to keep the answers 'simple' as I will be trying to communicate this information to my German mechanic (and my German still sucks even after living here for 2.5 years).

Thanks for any 'simple' help you can provide.

    Jeff

Great looking tandem! The discussions so far about the XTR Di2 equipment has been mostly speculation, since the stuff isn't readily available yet. IF (that is a big if) the speculation is correct, the limitation in what you want to accomplish may be the front derailleur. Although it will do triple, I don't think we have a definitive answer yet about whether it will manage the larger rings typical of road tandems.

Thanks. We've really enjoyed it. It's the 3rd tandem I've 'Captained' and by far the best handling one. We recently did the Pinarello GranFondo in Treviso, Italy. We were fortunate enough to meet Fausto Pinarello (the owner).

And thanks for your DI2 info.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. That is a representation of your current gearing compared to a theoretical 11-40 11s XTR cassette and rear derailleur paired with a semi-compact 36-52 double and Di2/Ui2 front derailleur. It provides you with a similar range, including a gear almost identical to your preferred granny gear. The steps between gears are also very similar to your current setup.

2frmMI: I can only speculate on synchro shifting by saying that there is a planned XTR double front derailleur and the computer shouldn't care whether it's hooked to XTR or Di2, only that it knows the gear sizes and that it has 2 positions to choose from.

    OK...thanks.

I guess the added questions your answer now begs are:

    1. Are all of these parts you list available now?
    2. Will an 11-speed cassette fit on my current wheel that currently has a 10-speed cassette?
    3. Do I still get standard 'road-type' shifter/brake levers with the XTR rear derailleur or do you have to use MTB type shifters and brake levers?
    4. Can I use current cranks, chain rings, and 'any' 11-speed chain(SRAM?), or .....not?

    Thanks. More questions coming.....(no doubt).

    1. Are all of these parts you list available now?
    * The road parts are available, I personally haven't seen the XTR parts yet.

    2. Will an 11-speed cassette fit on my current wheel that currently has a 10-speed cassette?
The XTR 40-11 11spd cassette will fit your 10spd hub. The carrier is designed to put the 40T cog farther inside (closer to the spokes) than a normal 11spd cassette. Other 11spds won't fit.

    3. Do I still get standard 'road-type' shifter/brake levers with the XTR rear derailleur or do you have to use MTB type shifters and brake levers?
Yes, you can use road shifters.

    4. Can I use current cranks, chain rings, and 'any' 11-speed chain(SRAM?), or .....not?
    * Maybe (I know, not an answer). Depends on your final gearing/set up. My first DI2 set up used the outer two ring positions, and I needed an extended FD clamp and I had to modify the FD with a longer actuator (set) screw to reach the outer ring. My current set up uses the inner two positions. I think TA makes rings up to 36T to fit the inner BCD, but that large of a ring on such a small BCD may be flexy.

Overall it may be best to give XTR DI2 a little more "development" time... Hopefully now that Shimano has a DI2 FD with the range for a triple they (or someone) will fit it with a road cage.

Non-related P.S.. I grew up just down the rad near Trier...Did [too] many bike trips from Aachen to Den Haag. Loved the Auto Frei days along the Mosel.

Thanks for the your info on DI2. I think I'm beginning to make a little sense of it. BTW, you're from Germany, now living in Cheyenne? My wife is from Cheyenne, now living in Germany.
