Wire Rim vs folding tire for tandem

I have heard that you should only use a wire rim tire (non folding) for a tandem due to concern with forces appied to the tire during high speed turns. Is there any truth to this? I have never run a folding tire on my tandem.

I was thinking of carring a folding tire on some century rides just in case something happens. I run 28mm Gatorskins and we are about 310 lb team. I have several century rides coming up in very remote areas and was thinking maybe I should carry a spare tire.

Is a folding tire ok for a backup and if so, what do you use? Thanks

I have heard that you should only use wire bead tires on a tandem but never from a source I would put any trust in. I have also heard there could be an advantage to using folding tires on a tandem with rim brakes on long descents do to no wires to overheat and melt the tire. I would put more trust in this one.

I run folding tires on all my tandems and triplet. I currently use Conti. GP 4seasons and have used other folding tires over the years. I also ride with other tandem teams that use folding tires. I've never had a problem or know anyone that's ever had a problem with any of them.

We do a lot of long unsupported rides and multi day rides so I carry a spare. When the rear tire needs replacing I move the front tire to the rear and put the spare on the front. That way I always have a good tire on the front and the spare won't be dry rotted.

Oh no! I recently put a set of folding Schwalbe Marathon Supreme tires on our Screamer!
Are we doomed? Nope. First time I've heard of this concern with folding tires.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a folding 32 that I may instead of buying another new tire.
I may switch to a folding tire vs the wire bead when these tires wear out.

Bikes: Burley Duet [of some unknown year] (the guinea pig); 2001 Ventana ECDM (the project); And always one less than I think I really need.

I've used both folding and non-folding, sometimes mixed and non-matched, sometimes the same model/manufacturer and sometimes not...The only difference I've found in that regard is the box they shipped in.

Been using folding clincher tires for years on our tandems. Work fine, no issues.
We are a sub-250 lb duo and use Maxxis Re-Fuse 700x28s at 110 to 120 PSI.
Carry the folder as a spare on long trips/tours.
Pedal on!
