Riding in the San Antonio and Austin areas

We are going to the SWTR in April and then heading to San Antonio for a couple of days. We will then spend a couple of days in the Austin area. Are there good, safe areas to ride in those cities?

I wrote a post recommending Fredericksburg instead of Austin/SA, then check and saw that the SWTR was in the 'Burg this year. We usually make it but I'm currently rehabbing my second knee replacement so who knows.

Yes, there are plenty of places to ride safely in both cities. More so in Austin. In SA, you might be relegated to the downtown area/mission trail.

We live in the Tulsa area and are going to the SWTR in April as well. If you choose to drive through Tulsa, we have some great riding trails.

I noticed you are from Central IL. I lived in the Decatur area, Niantic which is a small town West of Decatur, until I was 18. What part of Central IL are you in?

We are familiar with the bicycle riding in the Tulsa area, our youngest daughter lives there and she races for one of the local ladies team. We have ridden Tulsa Tough a couple of times and are regulars on the river trail system when we are there visiting. We will spend at least one night in Tulsa on the way to Texas.

We now live in Mahomet, I am retired from Caterpillar in Decatur.

Hope to see you in April. We will be riding a white Calfee with Hed Trispoke wheels.

Wow, it's a small world. We bought our first tandem in May last year and watched a little of Tulsa Tough last year but were not ready to ride in it. Maybe this year. I will look for you guys in Fredericksburg. We currently have a purpleen Canondale, but may have a different tandem in a couple of weeks.

Check Bike Austin | Bike Austin promotes access, education, safety and enjoyment of cycling in Central Texas. for Bike Austin group rides scheduled in Austin during your visit. Expected pace is listed; some are no-drop/regroup rides, some are group-start but self-paced ("here's a map and cue sheet, enjoy the ride").

Some maps I created for riding in Central Austin.

And longer routes originating from downtown.

Maps/cue sheets are handed out at the ride start.
