October 7, 2006 - Autumn in Bonham, Bonham, TX

Here we go again N. Texas BF'ers.

    Autumn in Bonham. Ride Website

    Elevation profile provided by Texas-Cycling.com

After today's ride at Cotton Patch I'm looking forward at another shot at those Leonard hills. I'm aiming for the metric again. Hopefully the weather and mechanicals will be more cooperative.

Updated orginal post with a link to the elevation profile for the 100k. Looks like this ride does indeed have more climbing than the Cotton Patch Classic. And the Leonard hills are a full 50mi into the ride. Going to have to keep some power in reserve till the end of this ride, and I'll definately be bringing the Gazelle to this one.

So, who's planning on making the trip out there Oct 7th?

My parents live in Pottsboro so I could do a visit and a ride. Sounds tempting.

Both of the difficult climbs only equal one quarter mile. The one that is 9.6% grade is only ~200 yards. It does suck that they are towards the end of the ride. There is one hill on my training route that is 8-9% according my Edge 305. I'm going rearrange the direction that I do my training route and start doing that climb at the end of my rides to see how it feels.

Good plan Kevin. I may have to make it out with you for one of those training rides to get in a few good hills. Not much around here comes close to 9%. I've come down with a cold of some sort after the Cotton Patch ride so I'll probably be off the bike for a few more days, as soon as I can get back on the bike I'll be searching out more climbs to train on.

Been sick all week, no training for Bonham this week for me. Hope to get over this darned cold soon. Keep wondering if its an allergy attack, but after the rains we've been having and I still have this much sinus pressure and cough - it's no allergy.

Still planning to make it to Bonham though. Picked up a set of rollers from Lotek this afternoon so worse comes to worse I'll try those out a couple evenings for at least 20-30mins of spinning to keep the legs loose.

You may have the same bug that my wife has been dealing with for the last two weeks. She actually went to the doctor, got put on some prescribed medication and still can't shake it. Some of her symtoms are sore throat and continuous coughing.

I have been so busy with work that I have only logged 50 miles for last week That is totally messing with me because I am used to logging at least 125 per week even on a bad week.

I hope you start feeling better, soon.

Well, over the cold/allergy attack of last week, but am now down with a strained back. Feeling better this afternoon, but probably stay off the bike at least one more day. Seems my body is conspiring against me. I've got mid-term exams coming up on the 3rd, so it may be a few more days yet till I get out for any length of a ride, but hope to at least get a few miles in here and there.

Ride is tomorrow morning. Who's going?? Cahill's had to cancel on me so I'll be riding solo unless I can find a couple people headed out there to ride with.

what distance are you doing? I'm thinking about the 46 or the 62 but not for the cash part of it. It's going to be a "game-time" decision tomorrow.

I"m hoping to do the 64mi self, but like you, it'll be a split of the road decision. See you out there dl.

How was the ride??? Sorry I couldn't join you. I promised the wife that I would do some things with her yesterday. I left my house at 7:30, rode to RBM Frisco, rode with that group on their Saturday morning ride then rode back home. 55 miles total and I actually had a great ride doing the combination of solo and group ride. I will be doing this more often. It was very cool when I left. I put on arm warmers but about 5 minutes into the ride, I wish I would have worn knee warmers and also.

kevin, been busy revamping my website, promise to get a ride review up soon.

In short, I decided to do the 46mi course, whch actually was almost 49mi. Winds kicked up more than expected, but it was an absolutely PERFECT day to ride. The first about 6mi sucked. Into the wind, on some of the worse chipseal I've ever dealt with, through a series of pretty decent hills. Pretty much shattered the pack of riders right from the get go. After that the road got a lot better, and much more enjoyable. I'll update later with pictures.

btw: check out the new website: http://thecuda.com

Yeah, the wind played a pretty nasty trick on us yesterday. My 15 mile ride home from RBM Frisco absolutely sucked. The entire last 5 miles was directly into the wind and I was completely wiped. I had my wife on standby to come pick me up if necessary but who in the hell wants to SAG if you are still able to ride, even if a slow pace.

I'll check out the revamped site.

Ok, here's the short yet complete review of the day's ride yesterday:

6:30am: out the door here in N. Dallas, google maps told me it would be a 1hr, 30min drive so I figured I'd be there at 8am for the 9am start. Plenty of time to register, get ready, warm up a bit, etc.

7:35am: roll into Bonham a bit on the early side. Got a fantastic parking place right next to the starting line. The ride organizers had people out directing traffic into town right up to the parking places. Registration was held in doors, which was nice since the temps were still a tad cool for my shorts and Tshirt.

Took my time getting ready, watching the other cyclists come through to the registration area, etc. Finally decided about 15min to 9 that I'd warm up the legs a tad. On my way around the block found Doggus and his wife getting ready to head to the starting line with their tandem. Followed them over to the starting line where we met up with a few other PBA members for the start.

Just before 9 the racers took off. Weren't many of them, and we all got a laugh about the start of the race. "Ready, and... go!" went over the loud speaker, and that was it. The sherriff's car and motocycles were going to lead the racers out, but I don't think they were quite ready to go.

Then we were off. First things first, make the first turn which featured lovely loose sandy gravel, and a nice large bump. Suggestion for next year, don't start us off so close to a turn. The front of the pack that I was in missed the first turn in town and had to take a small detour before meeting back up with the middle of the pack. We all had fun with that too. A light hearted start to the morning.

Then the real 'fun' started. Right out of town the road surface changed to VERY fresh VERY rough chipseal. I was thankful I was riding steel with traditional wheels that took some of the harshness away. I could only imagine what a 80's cannondale would feel like on that stuff. And of course we also had the wind in our face. And of course this is when the first climbs of the day started. Probably 3 or 4 decent climbs shattered the pack. I kept my own pace, let Doggus and the faster pack go, while staying ahead of the next fastest pack through the first two hills. The second pack caught me on the downhill off the 2nd hill, but I passed them again on the uphill. Repeat for the 4th.

About 6mi in, the road turned south out of the wind, and for that, all were thankful. The road also smoothed out, and the major climbs were over will until Leonard. The middle section of the ride was very enjoyable. Weather was perfect, winds were never in our face for too long. I decided to go the 46mi route instead of the 62 knowing I had school work to get done when I got home in the afternoon.

I rolled into Leonard knowing what was coming. Hills. It has been over a year since I'd taken the Leonard hills after bypassing them last month at the Cotton Patch Classic. I downed a PowerGel at the rest stop and some CytoMax before taking off again. Right after the rest stop I was passed by a group of 3 racers whom I tried to stay with for a little while (ya right). Then the hills came, the first two weren't bad at all, spun up them with realtive ease. The third one got me out of the saddle half way to the top. And the fourth is just mean. Bottoms out, then slowly climbs for a short distance bleeding off any speed you had, then turns skyward through a turn in the road so you don't see the top till you're about half way up.

The last 12mi after Leonard was quite nice again. Some rollers, some gentle ups and downs, one small stretch into the wind again where I met up with a woman riding a fixed gear Masi. We traded off pulling down the road a 19-21mph till we turned north out of the wind again and I set back to enjoy the scenery again and take the camera out.

The last 3-4mi into town my stomach started feeling a tad upset and was happy when I rolled through the town square (after one last little uphill into the square) and back to the start/finish line. Doggus rolled in from the 62mi ride only about 5-8min after I finished. He and his wife had done the 66mi route non-stop and were happy to be done. We relaxed a bit in the shade before I finished packing up and headed back into town. Over all, a great ride on a great day to ride.

Cuda, I ended up riding early from WRL but good report and nice pics. We usually ride the same areas yet I never notice how nice those areas are. Good report and mileage.

dl613: yeah, you really need to learn to pull your head up out of those drops a bit and enjoy the scenery a bit. I certainly had my times when I had my head down putting out the speed, but also sat up a bit and took in the suroundings a bit as well. I don't know what my next organized ride will be. This weekend I may end up doing the 8am Sunday ride with PBA depending on what Saturday's weather holds.
