Cuda is coming to Austin: July 14th

Wife and I are going down to Austin for a concert on the 14th, most likely driving down Friday night. Interested in getting a ride organized with the Austin BF crew that doesn't involve too much climbing (remember I'm a flat lander up here in Dallas). Who's interested, and anyone have a good idea for a route of maybe 35-45mi. Got to have some energy left for the concert later in the day.

Hey Cuda - kewl, c'mon down! There's some good, relatively flat areas if you get out on the NE country roads a bit. I'll come up with something for ya. Just shoot me a pm or email to remind me you're coming down.

Will do. Hopefully by then I'll drop a couple pounds and feel more confident about riding on my AC350 wheels for when the road does tilt upwards. I'm right at the lowest number I've heard the weight limit on these wheels being, but still well below the 'usual' number I've come across.

You could also go south...do the ATC ride to San Marcos and back. Not sure I'll make it as it's my wife's b-day and am pretty sure I'd end up on the sh*t list if I tried to pull that crap.

Just put my light wheelset on the bike just in case who ever I end up riding with steers us into the hills (or at least what I consider hills). Still up for about 30mi, not to hilly of a route on Saturday the 14th.

What time are you guys riding? My wife has been dying to get to San Marcos to do some shopping. She could drop me off, do her shopping then come back to pick me up. We could then spend the rest of the day/night in Austin.

Ah, a Bastille Day ride. My wife has also been discussing a trip to San Marcos with her sister (who resides in Austin), though I am not sure about the 14th.

Any routes in Southeast Austin would be flat. Creedmoor Cruise. Old San Antonio Road.

I can handle some hills, but dont' want to get too blown up since I have a concert to go to in the evening which my wife would be none-too-happy about me being exhausted during. Nor would I have a lot of fun. Wife and I are driving down Friday night, a morning ride before it gets hot would be best.

What pace do you ride at Cuda? My riding partner and I do alot of rides down south. Not too hilly @ all. 35 or 45 pretty open roads with few cars. Let me know!

I typically computer avg around 16.6-17.8 depending on terrain and traffic. Moving speeds 16-22 depending on conditions.

Not to hijack the thread - but I will be in Bastrop later this month for 3-4 days. Can anyone from Austin point me to a web page w/ routes around that area? Low traffic = preferred. Flat or hilly terrain = ok.
Thanks,
Jeff

Bump. Only a few days left before I head down that way and I'd like to get some plans setup before we start driving. Who's up for the ride and need to know where to meet up.

Hey Cuda - sorry, I started to reply to your PM but got pulled away before I could send it and wasn't able to get back on until this morning. Looks like I might have to work Sat. I could maybe squeeze in a short ride if we have wheels down at 8am, but I don't want to force the group to accommodate me. I'm open all day Sunday though if that's an option.

8am roll could work for me. That's fairly normal for me. We'll see who else wants to make it and when. Not sure about Sunday plans for me. Concert will likely go fairly late.

Saturday Ride in Austin....

Hey Cuda,

I just shot you an email. I ride every Saturday Morning on a semi-hilly route with a group called the Austin Tri-Cyclists. The shorter option on the ride is about 35 miles in length. The beauty is that you can ride at your own pace. The group may quickly disappear into the distance, but you can ride as hard as you feel up to. You're welcome to join the ride. I'd be happy to ride with you.

What concert are you in town to see?

Cheers,

Texbike

Out fishing with Annie on his lap, a cigar in one hand and a ginger ale in the other, watching the sunset.

Rides around Bastrop...

Hey Jeff,

There are a ton of nice empty roads with good riding around Bastrop. For a fun, hilly, twisty ride, be sure to ride the Park road between Bastrop and Buescher (sp?) State Parks. Buescher is close to Smithville which is due East of Bastrop.

There is an annual ride called "Pedal Through the Pines" that starts in Bastrop. Check out their website for maps of the routes: https://www.pedalthrupines.org/ .

Smithville has a lot of nice, empty (and flatter) roads in the area. It also has one of the best BBQ places in a 60 mile radius of Austin. It's called Zimmerhanzel's. It's been there forever and has been written up in Texas Monthly as well as the New York Times. As mentioned, it's just East of Bastrop and well worth the bike ride over to it.

Cheers,

Texbike

Well, so much for bringing my climbing wheelset. I blew out the rear tube, and the tire, this evening only a half mile from my apartment. Wanted to go around the block a couple times to test out the new (to me) AC 350's and *BAM*... *GROAN*... *BRAKE*... *%$#@*. I threw my Fulcrums back on the bike to pack up and head down tomorrow. Little heavier wheels, slightly smaller gears.

texbike, you have a ride route map online for that ride?

Cuda,

Sorry I don't have a ride map for this one (or an elevation profile). There is a ton of mapping software available now, but I have yet to use one of the apps to map the route.

I did a quick search on the web and wasn't able to find a map. Sorry.

Maybe someone else on the forum has access to one?
