I was out yesterday from 6:30 AM until about 10:30 with a couple of stops. I think it was in the 90's around 9:00 AM.

I went out at 7:30PM on Thursday for about 45 minutes, and it looked like I'd been riding for hours. I know it's always hot here in Houston in the summer, but it sucks doubly this year since I just got back from being in the Sierra Nevadas for a week where it was 40s in the morning and low 70s in the afternoon.

I went out with several BF members on the 4th. At 6 am, it was 82 degrees. This heat has been good for losing weight. Durning the month of June, I have lost over 20 lbs commuting in this afternoon heat.

I think I found the solution to Houston Heat yesterday. Ride in Galveston
It was cooler, nice ocean breeze, some good scenery (some bad)... and although I wasn't feeling up to it... there is an ocean to cool off in post ride.

Dude! After trashing your knees last week?
You da MAN!

I was gonna hit it this morning at 7, but decided to sleep and heal.

Ha! you missed the date of my post. It was the morning after the knee thrashing.

I think I'm off the bike except for maybe a trainer for a month.

With this heat, if I do a 60+ mile ride, I've been dropping about 4 pounds during a ride. I'm pushing as much fluid as I can deal with - about a 24oz bottle/hour and can't imagine trying to drink much more than that.

I'm pretty much back to normal weight within a few hours of being home and drinking a recovery shake and some water, and eating some food.

I have been getting more cramping in my legs this summer than years past, so may need to change up my foods on the bike a bit to see if I can avoid that nonsense.

i love this heat honestly, the breeze from a 20mph ride cools me off nicely. i ride between 5 and 8, so it's when i start it's usually 100+ i dont usually lose more than two lbs on a ride though, and i like to think that's due to the fact that when i wake up i basically start chugging water. i try to get at least a gallon down by 3pm. that being said, this summer i've lost 10 lbs, but i think that's just due to the extra weekly miles. stay hydrated people, generally speaking weight loss of more than a couple of pounds in a ride signals insufficient base hydration. texas makes it tricky though, too much water during the day and you're guaranteed cramps at mile 10, not enough and you're struggling to replace fluids as they scream out of your body.

who wants to take a scorching white rock ride at 5?

I hear what you're saying, but at least in my case, I drink plenty of water all day, every day - I don't wait till Friday to start loading fluids before longer weekend rides like a few people I know.

My point was that 5 pounds might not be that big of a deal, so long as you're replenishing those lost fluids soon after you finish a ride.

For the record, I put in 88 miles yesterday and 70 miles today, and lost/regained 4 pounds with each of those rides. If I was noticing uneven amounts of weight dropping e.g. more miles = more lost water weight, I'd probably be more worried.

oh, one more thing, don't have more than a liter or two of water without some kind of electrolyte source to supplement that!
dehydration may suck, but an electrolyte imbalance halfway through a ride is a recipe for disaster

some source i've read suggest that after an exhaustive high-heat workout you eat salty snacks, such as pretzels/chips, other suggested tomato juice (bloody mary, anyone?)
whatever it takes for you to keep peddling
