Austin Bike Clubs?

I am possibly looking to relocate to the Austin, TX area sometime early next year and I am interested in joining a cycling club. I am currently on a club in my area. I consider myself a B to B+ rider (ave. 17mph-20 mph) with mix terrain. The club I am looking to join would have a mix of A-C riders and even some racers who ride with the club. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am looking for websites and information on how often they ride. I think I am looking to do group rides about 2-3 days a week with me riding another 2 days or so on my own.

FYI..I am aware of ACA. Not sure if that's a bike club or just an organization that does rides.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

MondoDave,

Thanks. This is a good start. I have to assume there are a lot more clubs in the area. So if anyone else has information please send a long.

Thanks,

The ACA isn't really a club, but they do have "Classic" rides and "Hosted" rides. I don't know much about the classic rides, but I am one of the ride hosts for the hosted rides (https://www.austincycling.org/rides/hostedRides). There are plenty of hosted rides that are of varying distances and speed, so some of them should probably fit your needs. All of the rides are free - you don't even have to be a member of the ACA. You just need to sign a waiver and have a helmet.

There's plenty of shop rides that happen frequently as well. I've been doing the Nelo's Shop ride (https://www.neloscycles.com/specials.php) whenever I have time during the week. That's a fairly fast paced weekday ride that's a lot of fun.

If you're in the SW Austin area, there's the Circle C Ranch Cycling Club, CCRCC for short. No website, but their mailing list is CCRCC at yahoogroups.com and you can join and then look at the archives. They tend to ride a few times a week.

From this page -- https://bicycleaustin.info/getinvolved/txclubs.html -- lists these clubs in the area --

Austin Cycling Association, Preston Tyree P.O. Box 5993, Austin, TX 78763, 512-345-1154
Austin Ridge Riders, Mark Zahn P.O. Box 49143, Austin, TX 78765, 512-453-1955
Onion Creek Bicycle Club, Steve 2021 Bluebonnet #108, Austin, TX 78704, 301-539-3399
Violet Crown Sports Association, Richard Whittington 605 West 18th , Austin, TX 78701, 512--
Austin Triathletes, Andy Anderson 3616 Far West Blvd. #101-129, Austin, TX 78731, 251-8492
AMTG, Julie Wade C/O TPL 700 San Antonio St, Austin, TX 78701, 512-478-4644
Velocity, Prescott Christian Austin, TX 787

Ridge Riders are a MTB club. Don't know much more about the rest.

And this page -- https://www.usacycling.org/clubs/index.php?state=TX -- lists a whole bunch more, though many seem to be more racing teams than clubs.

Either way, I think you've got plenty of places to go looking now!

Dougmc,

Thanks so much. This is what I believe I am looking for. I am heading down in November for a long weekend and hoping to check out a few of these clubs.

Off hand do you know if most of these clubs ride 12 months a year or do they take the winter off? I have plans to go down in December for a week and wouldn't mind doing some riding.

Thanks again.

Bill

This is Texas ... winter is more pleasant for riding than the summer is most of the time.

That said, I don't really have much personal experience with these clubs except for the ACA and CCRCC, and both ride year round. (Most of my group riding is with the more social groups - Austin Social Cycling, the Monthly Full Moon Cruise etc. These groups ride year round, and generally even when it rains or the weather is somehow bad.)
