Anybody know what happened at the Mequite Rodeo Ride?

Anybody have info about crashes as the Rodeo ride in mesquite texas, yesterday?

I heard there were some sort "pile up crashes" involving many riders.

Too many riders on too little road?

I haven't heard anything, I just posted a note on the GDB site to see if they do.

I've ridden the Mesquite Rodeo Ride the last couple of years, but didn't this year. It's not any worse, in terms of crowd and road, than the other rallies around here. I suppose they all have the potential for multi-rider pileups. But usually after the first few miles, people get thinned out pretty good.

(Edit: One response on the GDB site describes a similar incident to the below item, not sure if it's the same wreck or two different sets of them.)

Scyene Road about 8 or so miles in was torn up on the oncoming traffics side. There was about a one inch drop off betwwen the two lanes. We saw two guys down who needed ambulances. I didn't see the crashes but it looked look they went off the left side and fell coming back up the drop off. It should have been marked. There was also an extra turn marked on the road that wasn't part of the course but many of the riders took it and it added about a 4 mile loop.

I know one of the cylists who got an ambulance ride. Minor concussion, so he doesn't remember what happened. Speculation is that he caught his front wheel either on the lip in the road or in a crack/rut. He is taking it easy for a few weeks, should be fine. Says his helmet probably saved his life. Discussion I heard was that road was fine earlier that week. All second hand info, I was not there.

I think it was about 8 miles or so in when a guy about 3 people in front of me went down pretty hard. The people around me were able to avoid going down but it did look like he hit hard. After that the group thinned out a little so we could see the 2 inch drop on the other road and everyone started calling out cracks and holes. It was a good ride really fast.

Thanks for the comments and links - a good friend of mine broke her arm at the ride. Its not clear how much of her injuries were due to the impact and how much from cyclists hitting her after the fall. Apparently this happened within a group with little warning.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I hope she recovers quickly. The only warning I got was seeing the rider in front of me fall.
