Question on Bike Insurance

Looking for some help on covering my bike insurance wise. First off do you guys insure your bikes and do you carry your insurance (not your health insurance card) on rides i.e. charity rides?

What company do you carry?

I contacted my auto insurance (progressive) and they currently do not cover bicycles. Just looking for some options as far as coverage.

I figured I'd ask here because well, we're all from TX. Specifically I'm in the Houston area if this helps. Thanks.

I have heard that my bike is covered by my homeowners policy. The bike is considered personal property. I am not an agent though.

I seem to remember recently asking this question to my rental insurance company--I'm am about 98.5% sure they said bikes (along with musical instruments/electronics/computers etc) are covered on your home policy. Unless there is some reason to specifically add extra insurance you SHOULD be fine.

I don't carry any insurance card on my rides. Are you talking about bike coverage or health?

For health insurance purposes I got a Road ID and it is linked to my health info online. Medical people can go to Road ID's website, put in my ID number and have access to all my info and my emergency contacts.

My bike is covered under home owners insurance. I suppose my question is (hypothetical situation) a rider is out on the road (charity event) and has an accident involving another rider. Is it treated like a motor vehicle accident and exchange information? The information given is home owners? What happens if one rider gets hurt? Is it up to said hurt rider to cover injuries and bike repair or does the rider that caused the accident responsible?

I'm asking because riding a large ride like the MS150 with 13k riders the chances of getting hurt go up significantly. I just want to make sure that I'm doing all that I can financially to protect myself from being sued if caught in the unfortunate event of causing an accident.

I'm just guessing but I would think that everyone is on their own. I know you will sign a waiver releasing the event from any liability.
Unless you do something that just screams "I'm at fault" then probably everyone goes their own way.
Of course you are living in America, where the odds of winning a lawsuit seem better than winning a lottery. So, even if you are just marginally involved in an incident, expect to get a call from Brian Loncar or Jim Adler.

My impression is that it is very rare for a cyclist to sue another participant in such an event for damages. But home owners insurance does generally include liability coverage for damages unintentionally caused by you to either property or other people with some specific exceptions such as motor vehicle use or business activities where you'd be expected to have other insurance policies. So it should cover you for damage you cause to another participants property or for medical payments if they are injured. Check your policy details for the dollar limits and any other exceptions.

That makes sense. I guess I will be looking back over my home owners policy to make sure. I was under the impression home owners merely covered my bike if it were stolen.

Having had my bike recently stolen and recovered, your home owners will cover the bike it certain situations, but depending on your policy it maybe subject to your normal deductible. You can get special riders to your home owners that will give you more coverage, but there are also cycling specific policies that cover crashes, damage, theft , etc with deductibles much lower than home owners.
