Sciguy, we worked a breakpoint together today on the r2r ride. I was Bill talking to you about buying a new bike. Nice to meet you, sorry I didn't figure out it was you until now. When you mentioned riding a surly I started to wonder but got distracted before I could ask you about it.

HAHA no kidding! In the red A&M jacket. Yeah it all makes sense now lol

That is great. I had a great time. I blogged about it as well - though you didn't make it into any of my pics https://thesurlybiker.wordpress.com/...ing-weeks-1-2/

Hope to catch you again sometime.

I was out there for the ride as well training with a couple friends. I was in a tie-dye Saint Arnold jersey. Was a fun ride, but car traffic definitely picked up by mid-morning. Maybe I just need to go faster so I'm done earlier.

Only thing about the rest stop you both worked was how I almost face-planted trying to hop over the ditch going to the porta-potty and then dumb me almost doing the same thing again crossing back over to my bike. And then realizing I could (and should) have simply walked around the ditch.

Yeah, apparently the porta-potties were setup by the vendor at the wrong location. We were supposed to be on the empty lot one block closer to 359. Luckily both are owned by the same owner, so they didn't make us move. It was definitely not an ideal setup with the ditch there and most of the porta-potties on a slope. I was just happy we didn't have anybody tip over in one of them or fall out the door while trying to get situated.

Getting really annoyed at the weather. We didn't go this morning to Ready2Roll because of the rain and that of storms. At this point we've missed more than we've ridden.

I think my new bike is cursed...I have had three chances to ride since I got it. And it has rained two of the three weekends. This morning was not too bad for the first two laps. I made the mistake of going for a third lap and the rain started picking up a little. And it never got close to the temps they were predicting. My car was reading 51 when I left to come home just after 11 am.

Ugh. Glad you were able to get in some saddle time. New bike curse is the worst.
How were the laps (route wise)? I read the email at 5am this morning when my alarm went off, but looked at the radar and the weather sites and just decided not to drive a hour to be miserable and cold.

I know how you feel.

On the bright side, watching the weather report made me realized that Dallas cyclists can't even ride at all. I am going to wait for the roads to dry up later on this afternoon and do a neighborhood ride. This may be a good time to add on a 20' HIIT session.

How was the turnout there this morning?

It was surprisingly good for the conditions. Maybe 250-300? We certainly didnt have much trouble parking. I dont think many did more than one lap though. Sag/rider ratio was probably 1:1 by the time I was on my third lap. Route was good for what it was. Pavement on that loop is good and it is relatively quiet for most of the route. Was just a 12 mile L-shaped box of right turns. I will see if I can post a strava link later.

The guy at the check-in table said there was about 200 people that showed up for the ride. Seemed kinda high to me seeing as there was probably on average only one set of initials on each sign in page.

We rode one lap and decided instead to go get some breakfast. The route wasn't that bad but nothing all that exciting. There were a few rough patches in the road, but traffic was very light. Except for the Audi SUV that kept stalking us the entire lap. I kept looking over my shoulder and seeing headlights thinking it was a car needing to pass, yet it was the same silver/gray Audi every time. He'd pass us, pull over to stop on the side of the road, and then repeat again and again. My buddy was joking it was like we were on the tour and had our own support vehicle.

I had a similar experience on lap two...was about to ask them to start playing eye of the tiger out the window or something just to feel more like a goofy TV commercial. I saw on Facebook that they had 218 people sign in to ride, but I would imagine well over half only did one lap.

Although it's costing me, I've decided to supplement the Ready2Roll training rides with other organized rides when it looks like the former ride will be rainy. At this stage of the game, I really can't afford to miss many more training rides. I did the Gator Ride in Baytown on Saturday (the 43-mile route). The ride went through some pretty industrial parts of town, but there were some neat highlights - crossing the Fred Hartman Bridge (first time I've had to go deep into my small ring but the descent was fun), riding right past the San Jacinto Monument and Battleship Texas, and taking the Lynchburg Ferry. All in all, a very nice, well-organized ride with a super friendly group of volunteers. I highly recommend it for those who haven't tried it before.

No arguement here on the crappy weather. I'm not so worried for myself; I've been getting my miles in via commuting (although, maybe not this week). I'm worried about my wife. It's her first MS150. She's done some long rides with me, but R2R is a great group riding experience, as well as good ride variety (hills). Looking forward to nicer weather.

Just explain rules #5 and #9 to her. Then tell her the actual ride always has a tailwind because Austin sucks.

Edit: Since bikeforums decided to make the number signs into clickable hashtags for some reason, the rule numbers are a reference to the velominati.com rules.

Looks like they have taken out the chance of rain for Saturday. But it is supposed to be another cold start. If the scenery and roads weren't so nice, I would be seriously second thinking the long drive up to new waverly tomorrow morning...

I can deal with cold. I can't deal with cold and wet (I know... rule 5).

I will be there.

Its true - I'd rather be cold, than cold and wet. All things being equal I'd rather not be cold either, but...

As of now, the wife and I are planning on being there. Wish it wasn't over an hour drive. ugh.

I'll be there in the morning as well.

It should be a cold start, but it looks like it'll warm up fairly quickly and should be up in the mid/upper 50's by the end of the ride.

Only thing though is that I was a bit confused about the starting location until I read the email about half a dozen times while looking through Google Earth. The map he references (from last year) shows the start at the high school south of 1375, but the email says at the intermediate school north of 1375. I'll go by the email since it should be correct, he kept talking about the 'junior high school across the tracks'. I'm assuming that the set of buildings with a football field near it that's about a 1/4 mile north and a bit east of the intermediate school? Guess I'll find out in the morning.

This was my takeaway as well. The maps didn't match what he was saying, and when I looked at Google Earth I made the determination myself -same as you.

Glad I wasn't hte only one who was a little confused. Maybe he'll clarify in today's email (assuming we get one).

If you look at the "New Waverly Parking Overview.pdf" file, it will be very clear. Looks like it will just be me going out tomorrow morning. Wife got in late last night from being out of town and wants to sleep in tomorrow am. I will be coming from the west side of town near west little York and hwy 6 if anybody wants to carpool.

Getting real tired of this cold ass weather.
Otherwise good ride today. The lack of useable bathrooms sucked, the scenery made up for it. Nice to get some hill time in too.

Yeah, this cold stuff is for the birds for sure. At least it looks like this Saturday in Fayetteville should be reasonably warm if the long range forecast holds. Might be doing the ms150 in the peak of wildflower blooming if it doesn't warm up soon.

My legs were telling me all about those hills when I was leading a 90 minute spin class this morning.

HahahahaMy wife ended up having to SAG cause she hurt her knee doing all the hills. I should qualify that by saying she hasn't been riding as much and hasn't hit hills in a very long time.
I did alright though.
