Rode this morning as well - from the east side. Still flooded indeed - and also the path is covered with tons and tons of debris. Gotta wait for park works to come clear it out (who knows how long). You could blaze a trail through it if you want, but it was still flooded down toward the bridge.

Nope.
If you ride GBP all the way out west to Fry Road (where the paved trail ends, theres a gate a few picnic tables etc, a Walgreens is across the street) - this is basically where 99.99999% of people stop. Some you will see cross the street straight through the intersection and go up the road. Don't do that.
Instead, cross the street and go into the park to the right, follow the path through the park along Fry Road (so, heading NE), the park goes about 2 blocks, you'll cross a side street, and go past a car wash place, then right as you get to the bridge, there's an entrance to the greenway.
Here, I illustrated:

I never even noticed it until I met up with another commuter who showed me. The little slit in the brick wall is open. No gate. You can ride through the neighborhood and catch the Mason Creek Trail.

Actually the first one you come to is gated. The second one is actually a different neighborhood and is not gated. Narrow - but no gate.

I heard the debris in George Bush Park was cleaned up and it is now rideable, however, some folks complained about the smell still lingering.

We will be doing KFC next weekend, probably the metric route. Did the NWCC Saturday morning ride with my wife this am, so won't be doing the bike barn ride. Btw, NWCC now is starting a "true 16-18" group in addition to the traditional "liar's club 16-18". So if you want an honest 17-18ish avg ride instead of the 20-21 that the liars club rides, that group is now available.

Hello everyone,
I'm planning on visiting Houston next weekend and I am looking for routes for me to ride. Is there a good website with a list of routes? San Antonio has this site: San Antonio Cycling Club and I was wondering if there is something similar for the Houston area?

I will be in staying in the Woodland Heights area but I don't mind driving somewhere. Places to go, things to see within a 15 - 30 mile ride even it's out and back. I'll be on my road bike so no off road trails unless they are easy to get around on. Any in site would be helpful.

From there you can hop on the Buffalo bayou trail and go a little ways and head toward downtown, and also hop on the heights bike trail through the heights and head toward white oak path and tc jester. unfortunately those are not long rides.
My suggestions would be to head to the parking lot at the HW 6 / Briar Forest intersecton: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Wood...29.7867647!1m0
This will give you access to long protected ride through GB park and Mason Creek greenway, and Terry Hershey park - total round trip ~50 miles.
You can ride the roads through the Heights and Montrose by you'll be stopping a lot at lights and for traffic and it's generally not that safe becaue of traffic IMO.

I've seen it for a bit but I have no idea when it got there. There are forums and subforums all over this place lol. I guess they want rides there and discussions here. I was putting my rides here until I noticed that forum then I just quit putting them altogether.

So, who's riding the Katy Flatland Century this weekend? Gonna be blazing hot and blazing fast! Will be my first century, and of course since NWCC is the sponsoring club, lots of us will be out there as well.

I wont be riding the ride but I will be out there somewhere. I'm either riding from HBC on 1093 or from Royal High in Brookeshire. Parts of the routes match up so I think my normal route is going to be more crowded than usual lol.

I did critical mass 6 or 7 times. It is cool for a while then it turns into a group of drunken fools that purposely agitate traffic, smash their beer bottles in the street, and harrass cops in a group. Its been about 4 years since some drunk girl ran me into a curb and destroyed my wheels. Maybe it has been fixed. A lot can change in 4 years.

I will never ride with CM. They are not helping cycling in Houston with their antics. I know there will be people that show up here and tell us all how fun it is and how responsible the riders are and how all the stories we hear are just lies. But I also read other sites not dedicated to cycling that discuss Houston events and issues, and it is very clear that outside of the cycling community, CM is viewed EXTREMELY negatively, and is actively damaging the view of cyclists and cycling issues among those who do not ride bikes and who have encountered a CM ride while driving. Every time CM holds a ride, a thread pops up that generally turns into a cyclist bashing free for all. Any other thread about cycling similarly quickly involves a reference to the antics of CM and devolves into an "I will be damned if I willingly share the road with cyclists after dealing with those a-holes!" type of rant fest.
So if you feel like you need to experience it, go ahead, but do it for your own selfish fun, not because you think you are doing something positive for cycling in Houston.

It must have changed because the facebook page says they did 20 miles after work 6pm. I imagine it's difficult to do that much mileage if you're drunk and tauting traffic. I wonder how it's organized. Says there were 6000 people. There're so many traffic lights. I'd have to drive to downtown with my bike on the rack. Where do I park my car?
Park as close to Tranquility Park as you can. Be cautious of where you are parking just to make sure you won't be towed. There are some really cool things to see on these rides. I saw a bike made from a metal bed headboard and another had a guy standing on the back rack playing a banjo. Usually the drinking and smoking starts before the ride. The first break is generally at a gas station where the bikes flood the parking lots and go inside to start buying beers. Sometimes they stop at art showings, barber shops, concerts on top of parking garages, or grocery stores. The barber shop was weird but there was free beer there… for some reason. They probably cruise about 5 or 6 mph in the back. The people in the front go faster until the back people start yelling. Sometimes it groups back together.
We were on Washington and they were taking both lanes. There was probably, wild guess, 1500 of us. There were cars in the back honking and bikers yelling back. Traffic was backed up forever. A cop car came up and started telling people to stay in one lane over his PA. All but one guy moved over. Remember, we are going 5ish mph. You can almost WALK this fast. He yells at the 2 cops in the car “F*** you pigs!” over and over. The passenger cop jumps out and starts chasing, the biker takes off in front of the car, the car clips his back tires, the kid falls, gets back up, and BAM passenger cop tackles him haha. It was really funny untill about 1000 people surround the cops chanting “Kill the cops!” and “Police Brutality!”. We left immediately. I have a pic of the kid on the ground in front of the cop car somewhere.
I was hopeful to the cause of the group after reading the webpage and the “purpose” they ride for. It all sounds very good in theory. But I just couldn’t get behind it in person back then. Like I said though, it could be totally different now and I hope it is. It is hard to attract only responsible people to a group ride, at night, in Houston, where alcohol and drugs are tolerated. The group mentality can easily lead several out of a couple thousand astray. It is more rowdy in the back so I recommend the front.
Also, on the 2nd Friday of the month is a smaller ride. Same place, same time. About half or less of the people. I did a couple of these too.
For your entertainment, watch some of the youtube videos of “critical mass”.
Have fun and share the experience with us. I really hope it is better now.

It's really a shame. The group running it (even though it says nobody is in charge) is really trying to do it right, at least the 20 or so in Houston. The 1000 or 2000 people that show up could care less. It's a party on wheels to them. I wont go back either. It has nothing to do with a "cause" but everything to do with my safety. Those crazy bikers will meet a crazier motorist one day and I don't want to be there. Too many people been purposely ran over on critical mass rides across the country. Several on video as well. I'll take my chances being accidentally ran over in Fulshear.
