Ideas for a 100-150 mile mini tour near Houston TOMORROW (Friday Oct 17)?
I know there's a Galveston Bay ride this weekend, but I can't make that. I have to ride tomorrow. I've been cycling to Brenham for the past two years, but I'm looking for something less highway-ish. I've been rear-ended four times (in my car) in the past two years. The texting drivers have made me squeamish.
Willing to drive for an hour to start the tour, so Magnolia, Conroe, League City, Pearland, Sugarland, Cypress, Spring, etc. are all acceptable starting points. I'm on 2" tires, so almost anything goes. |
Texting drivers are everywhere. Good luck on your ride. I dont really know any long routes.

Not sure where you are, so not sure what constitutes an hour drive to get to a start. If you are on the west side of Houston, I would consider going out to Fayetteville and riding around that area. Or you could start in Sealy or Bellville and go out to Fayetteville and ride around that area. Try going to ready2rollcycling.com and look at the "communications" tab for the Houston Series. There are sets of maps for the weekly rides with lots of good routes in the 30-60 mile range. They are all mostly west of Houston and you can easily link a couple of them together to get a 100-150 mile ride...like maybe use the Sealy ride map as your start and ride out from Sealy to New Ulm, then use the New Ulm ride map to get out to Fayetteville, and then use the Fayetteville map to ride the big loop out in that area...then come back to Sealy.

You could look at some of the rides that take place in southeast Texas and use their routes. You can checkout some of the current and upcoming rides at my website: Texbiker.net

Lots of miles to be ridden around Katy and up towards 290.

Great ideas. I intend to follow up on some of those. Thank you.
Here's what I ended up doing: • started off in Brookshire then seriously meandered up to 529, hitting what dirt roads I could--not many • 529 west to Belleville, not missing ferry road just west of the Brazos river--it's cool • north from Belleville on 36 to Brenham--least interesting part of the journey • eat a lot of icecream • out of Brenham south down Wonder Hill then Phillipsville Church Rd • south a bit on 36 then east-ish on Peters San Felipe back towards Brookshire 96 miles. Averaged 9.3 mph. Hills, loose dirt, hills on loose dirt, cracked asphalt ... highly recommended for a loooong-feeling century with just enough daylight left for photographs, ice cream, and a little sight seeing / digging around. Bring water and wide tires. Lots of dirt and very few stores. |
