My dog did not "run until she collapsed". What happens when you do a heavy workout? Ever heard of delayed onset muscle soreness? Animals get it to. It's natural and healthy and part of building muscle. I never said she collapsed. You put words in my mouth. and also ignore the fact that I said the vet gave her a clean, happy bill of health.

Every day a winding road

The very fact you were arrested for punching someone shows that you are someone that does not make good decisions. I don't see how anyone should trust anything you have to say.

Skin heals. We've been backpacking, and the dog wore through his pads. So, he ended up with improvised booties. It certainly wasn't a life or death situation, and the feet healed quickly.
There were concerns about dog safety early in this thread. Hopefully the OP took reasonable precautions to keep the dog comfortable. Assuming it had shade, air, water, food, etc, I wouldn't worry about abuse. Tired? Ok, let it rest (which it was doing in the trailer).
One should be able to see a dog lagging behind, or laying down and panting at stop signs, and change how they're being handled based on what is going on. If it wants to run, let it run. If it wants to rest, let it rest.
No idea what the OP was actually doing.
Did the people in the car yell, scream, cuss? No doubt they were saints in court (with a witness to corroborate an unprovoked attack).
Still, punching someone is a bit excessive use of force. I have to wonder if the OP has had other previous violent outbursts. A police record? History may have affected the harshness of sentencing.
Hopefully he will learn enough to keep his hands to himself. It is a tough lesson.

Admittedly the bison story is a stretch of logic. My point is that animals aren't people. We don't know what they do or don't like. We can't always tell when they're in distress (the people thought the bison was "cold") or doing just fine.
The dog may not have been acclimated to running like he had her running, but there seemingly was no indication the dog was in distress either. By his own admission "(s)he ran harder and longer than I expected her to the first couple days, so the 3rd day she could barely walk because her legs were so sore and wobbly. So she laid in her trailer until her soreness healed." It wasn't like he forced the dog to continue on walking or running. The dog was in the trailer resting. I think the running just caught up with the dog by the third day. The same thing happens to people - we push ourselves a bit further than we think and don't come to that realisation until after it has happened. I don't see anything tunaofthedirt did as being intentionally abusive.
Let's face it: dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, etc. are property. We need to treat animals humanely and, for me, that's where it ends morally and legally whether you are referring to wild, tamed or domesticated animals.

I'm just glad he doesn't have a kid.

13 months for punching someone? You can guarantee that there is more to this story. Hopefully he goes back to where he came from soon.
