Gilles Berthoud touring/Randonneur bike, any experiences??

    Hello,

I have been offered a Gilles Berthoud full bike for sale. I am waiting to hear more details about frame type, etc etc, but I know it has a nice royal blue paint job, integrated front rack, full mudguards, sti shifting, and that's about all i know for the moment.

Its darn near impossible to find info online for these bikes. Their (Gilles Berthoud ) website is impossible to understand, and it seems they only make tandems now anyway. I am hoping someone here has any information on these bicycles? I'm a bit of a sucker for things French, so this one is pulling the heart strings some.

really interested to hear what you have seen heard or experienced.

Thanks so much in advance, I appreciate any feedback at all. I'll update the thread as I learn more.

    Matt

Gilles Berthoud sells high quality goods if his saddle are anything to go by but it does seem that he is only producing Tandems at the moment.

Again if these bikes are produced in France it does mean that they will come with French threads and screw sizes which can cause some problems for the future.

The potential of French threading and sizing may depend upon how old the frame is and how it was spec'd when ordered or built. Just another factor to ask about.

I do not have knowledge of their current or recent production. But, I would be surprised if a bike with STI shifters (which implies pretty new) had french threading and tubing diameters. It would be very hard for a small fabricator to find enough french bottom brackets, etc. to keep selling bikes with an odd thread pattern. They might even have trouble buying frame tubing that was not sized for common headsets and seatposts. And even if it was, the components probably have a lot more miles left on them so it might not be a problem even if it was french threading. If you are lucky, you will get panniers with it.

for anyone who may have been following this thread, I am purchasing the bike. It is approx year 2000 build with full Sachs New Success. The seat post and stem are French, 22mm instead of 22.2 for the stems and 26.4 for the seat post. I have posted this on a couple bike forums and got notes from "Its fake, he only makes bags, not frames" to "I'd pay a lot for just the frame/fork". So far not one actual owner of this bike, making me think they are exceedingly rare.
All reports indicate high quality though. I am looking for a bike with quirkiness, I have a normal bike already. It will be a fun and exciting project.

To fan the flames a bit, this Socal website is selling Berthoud full bikes or frames with integrated racks and fenders.
    https://www.adrenalinebikes.com/stor...oductid=139231
For the bargain frame price of $3899.00 plus whatever components one wants. I mocked up a Record build over $6800, haha. my oh my.

There is nothing to assure me this bike is as new as 2000. I agree its odd that they would still be building with French dimensions, but the French are rather stuck in their ways eh?
At this point its a leap into the unknown, but probably a pretty safe one.
