I've only done the Oregon Coast but I hope to visit Portland and wouldn't mind touring Steve Prefontaine sites, many of which are further inland.
Coming from the flat midwest the SF hills are something different to See
but living there , i got to the places I needed to go using the valleys between the hills ,
which is of course where the main routes are.
Where I Am now is on 1 big hill .. other than at sealevel its all get off and push ..
Pushing your Butt back off the saddle and low , does move the C of G back & Down for steep descents..

Yea , Bowerman/Prefontaine/Knight origins of Nike & the waffle maker shoes... around Eugene , U of O .
it's the 'somewhat' older Louis and Clark Expedition.. Jeffersonian western exploration .. that's significant here..

The biggest draw for me would be Prefontaine/Bowerman. I tried to find a memorial on the coast which I couldn't find in Coo's Bay. I gave up since I also had to get to camp and find a hotspot to connect with my mom. I couldn't seem to get a phone signal.

There is a bark-mulch running loop maintained in south Eugene, named after Steve P. Hayward field Track is still there ..
its paved with shredded rubber..
Some Kids, last month~ish, started a Fire in the civic stadium the Farm Pro baseball team the Eugene Emeralds used ..
When I lived there.
But Nike & UofO had a new one already , so the old one built of wood , I expect to become more real-estate acres to sell .

I'll question the Cycle Pub as passing the rules of the OLCC, the state liquor control commission ,
Pints on the Sidewalk sitting in a chair at a table are rarely done, legally, outside a bar, AND
Bicycling under the Influence is a thing 'the Man' arrests you for..

Cycle Pub has been around for years--I don't know the local regs but Bend OR is known as a relaxed-type town. Hopefully the Pub pilots stay sober enough, the machine's handling doesn't look very spritely.

Still check the state Liquor laws before buying one .. Out side of NOLA and maybe parts of GA.
blood alcohol tests for drunk in public are still typical trial court evidence .

I know these things are a menace in other cities and in one instance some drunk off duty cops on one of those things assaulted some kids on bikes for yelling at them or something silly like that. There have also been a lot of accidents and other issues with that sort of stupidity.

Update on what I've been considering...
- Stem - Going with Velo Orange threadless. Was going to go Quill until I discovered the Tout Terrain "The Plug III" which requires a threadless stem. Will go nice with the SON28 SL.
- Headset - Also Velo Orange, and I guess The Plug III will be part of that.
- Handlebar - Decided to go with with the Velo Orange Left Bank Handlebars or the Porteur Handlebars. For the upright position of my bike, I don't have to worry much about hand positioning since I won't have to put much pressure on my hands at all.
- Saddle - The Brooks B135 or the same saddle that's on my Pashley which is the Brooks B33. Would consider the Brooks B66 if I get Big Apple tires that provide some suspension.
- Seat Post - Something with zero offset... Still haven't found one, but I need it in a silver colour.
- Cranks - Velo Orange Grand Cru Fluted Single Crankset MK2 which is 44T, coupled with the 17 cog on the Rohloff I'll have an 18.8 gear inch. Low enough gear inch for whatever hills I encounter loaded. I don't have much experience in the difference between 19 and 17 GI. I'm hoping it's fine. Will couple the Grand Cru Crankset with a Velo Orange Chainguard. There was another Velo Orange Chainguard that would go well with the Retro look, but a little too fancy shmancy.
- Brakes - Still haven't decided. The Velo Orange Grand Cru Zeste with Salmon Kool Stops is what I'm thinking, but I haven't Ruled out Magura V-Brakes.
- Fenders - I decided not to go with Velo Orange. Just kidding! I'm going with 2.15 tires (Big Apple And Marathon Almotion) and these fenders say 50mm width tires max. Unsure if I have to find something else.
- Racks - Decided to go with Tubus. They look great and have a large following of users. Either Cosmo as mentioned or the Logo Titan.
- Front Light - B&M Lumotec Classic T Senso Plus with the SON28. Decided against battery. Just need to go faster for both the "The Plug III" and light to work. Luckily the Senso only draws for certain lights depending on what time of day it is. And it has an off switch if needed.
- Wheels - The wheel builder (Cyclemonkey... AWESOME GUYS!) is going to send me quotes, but basically quote for rims with and without Ceramic Coating, Rohloff 36 Internal in the rear, SON 28 SL in the front. Ryde rims, and unsure what spoke, but I'll take their suggestion. They know I want Bomb Proof wheels.
- Chain - Unsure what size chain is compatible with the Rohloff and Grand Cru Crank but I'll be choosing something durable and strong so it lasts long before having to change it. Cycle monkey suggested a belt drive, and to build the frame to accommodate a belt drive even if I don't want one. Interesting!!!

Not sure if you have pulled the trigger yet on the bike, but I would like to suggest something that I did not know about until comotion told me. I recently built a very similar bike to yours but went with the pangea. Once I talked with comotion they sold me on 2 things I'm very happy with.
1) stainless dropouts front and rear
2) Dynamo specific front fork which uses the stainless steel dropout to tranfer power from hub to lights. This is nice because Son makes a hub with no wires now and the wire is in the fork so you can take the hub off without wires. It's the small things but really clean and nice when your tires and have to change a tire.
Other than that our builds are similar I went mechanical disk TRP Spyre just because I have grown to like stopping power and wheel strength of disk.
I picked every part of my build specific so let me know if you have questions. The guys at cycle monkey were really good to work with on the crank chain line bottom bracket questions I had. They all run similar setups so I had them send me Segunio single speed, surly stainless chainring, SKF BB, and the chain they run.

Definitely getting the SON28 SL which works with the dropout connection. Wanted it as soon as I saw it, and Independent Fabrication does the built in dropout for them in their forks all the time. As for Stainless dropouts, I'm sure IF could do that. What was the reasoning that convinced you to get them? Not sure how much this would increase the bank, but I'm spending so much already, what's a little more? I like the idea that the paint won't scratch putting the wheels in and out.
I've made some headway with handlebars. I feel like I need to ask about upright touring, and see how many people have an upright position, or if they don't what their complaints are. Decided on the Nitto Bosco Bar because I'm fearful of perineum pressure leaning forward, and overall prefer the more upright position of riding.
What chain does Cycle Monkey run? I know they weren't impressed with the chain on my ICE Sprint FS and suggested a chain that lasts three times as long, but expensive for that reason. The SKF Bottom Bracket looks and sounds sweet! I'm not hooked on Velo Orange. Their handlebars were what led me to them, and I just liked a lot of their other items. Plus, my paint job is going to be orange. I'm taking my time building the bike, so lots of time to figure things out. I don't want to rush such an expensive investment, as much as I want it ASAP! My first tour isn't till next summer, so there's time.

Hello Everyone! I just wanted to thank everyone who replied to this thread and all of the input that helped shape my new bike, so I'm coming back to share not only pictures but also that my touring bike has been completed at the 11th hour! If it wasn't for the last minute, nothing would ever get done.
I'm just a few weeks from my Halifax -> Antigonish, NS -> Pictou -> PEI (most of it) -> Bathurst NB -> Matane, Qc -> Quebec, Qc -> Shawinigan, Qc -> Montreal, Qc. Here's hoping I can manage 100km a day on this beast.
Thanks again, and enjoy the pics!

I haven't heard that expression... They certainly style their bikes beautifully! I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever you have made. They make sweet looking frames!

Yeah it is common when someone posts in an old thread that has gone dormant for a long period of time. They do make quite nice stuff. I haven't ordered anything yet but am just considering it. I just built up my Co-Motion (and need to get photos up) so I shouldn't buy anything else for a bit at least not a full custom from IF. Maybe if my position and pay grade changes at work I might celebrate with more than just cake but until then I am mostly content with my stable.

Thanks Tyrion!!! I hope my pictures are as nice, but these were from Cycle Moneky who built the bike once the frame was done. I hope to have it soon, and will take more pictures, particularly curing my trip!

Yeah I do need another bike and I could use something a little more racy or a mountain bike and actually go mountain biking, We shall see but right now the only bike that is closer to pulling the trigger on is a All City Nature Boy 853 Frame which I might either do fixed or maybe as a drop bar Alfine Di2 bike.
