Best non cleated touring shoes?

Please suggest a pair to replace my Nike Velos from the 1980s. Is there an upgrade that looks as good?

The best is the one that fits you the best and that has whatever else you are looking for in a shoe.

By the way...In this day and age, you can buy a touring shoe that will accept cleats and just not attach cleats.

This is not an exact answer, but it's kind of subjective anyway. I recently found out that if I put Superfeet inserts in my trail running shoes they work great on the bike. The inserts have a semi-rigid plastic bed that stiffens the shoe. The inserts are a little pricey but they last way longer than the shoes and are usually good for five or six pairs. The running shoes are very light and comfortable, have a "grippy" sole that works well with my pedals, are well ventilated, and dry quickly.

even though i have no idea what the 'best' touring shoe is, i'll chime in anyway. it's the interwebs, for cryin' outloud!
the guy at Pedaling Nowhere like the 5-10 shoes. I am thinking of buying a pair, but haven't pulled the trigger yet.
For your convenience: Five Ten - Home
My 5 day tour I forgot my New Balance shoes, and road 380 miles in a pair of TOMS (buy one give one). I survived, obviously, but the shoes took a beating. And when they got wet, they tended to stay wet for a long time. So I will NOT recommend TOMS for bike touring.
Let me know if you get the 5-10s.

I'm interested in this as well as I'm building up a touring bike. I've used toe clips and straps before with a pair of mtb shoes that I did not attach cleats to. It worked. There are a lot of shoes designed for riding with platform pedals and some people like to tour with platform pedals.

Many trail shoes have quite stiff soles and are good for touring.

I use the Keen cycling sandals with SPD cleats, but I think the sandals would work great without cleats too. I have the Commuter III model and the Arroyo model. They are constantly changing models, I have not seen their current Commuter IV model.

On days when my cycling shoes or sandals are soaked and I want to give them a chance to dry out, I instead use the platform side of my pedals and wear Merrill Moab Gore Tex shoes which I bring for off-bike use. The sole is stiff enough to work fine for cycling.

I have come across the Giro Republic, looks a cool touring type shoe. Or maybe just putting a Giro cycling sole into an existing shoe...

Any of these come in a 8 1/2 EE?

I am riding with New Balance running shoes, but have the feeling that they are not stiff enough for touring.

I've been wearing Shimano mountain / touring shoes for years. I use them with clipless, but there's nothing preventing you from using them with platforms. They are stiff enough for cycling and very comfortable to walk in. At one point in I went an entire year with them as my only pair of shoes.

I had a pair of non-cleat Keen sandals that I wore for years, until the sole split in two. They were my favourite shoes for any circumstances (well, maybe not formal occasions). When they broke, I immediately got a replacement pair, which started to separate at the ankle in a depressingly short amount of time, so I turned them in for a replacement, which did the same thing, so I tried a few other options. Nothing quite as good as the Keens, so I got another pair, which again started to separate at the ankle, so I returned them. Now I'm wearing some Teva sandals, but when I wore them as my only footwear, they were not great.

So my answer is Keens from 2010 or earlier. If you're going to go back in time to get some, let me know. I might have you pick me up a lifetime supply.

Fitting does not seem to be a problem for me. Of course trying them on first would be an advantage but having them mostly available by mail only does not allow this.
I find the shoes available now do not allow a quill pedal cage to sit as well on the sole unless your position is exactly 90 degrees to the pedal.

I am a fan of the swoosh.

I ordered this jetlag nero in the DZR brand shoe direct from DZR.

They got here fast. First impression, they took some time to put these together and it shows. they are quite nice, and pretty cool looking too! Put a quick 5 miles on em to see what they feel like and they are stiff in the right places for riding, much better than my asics or my leather shoes, can't wait for a longer ride. but very comfy as a casual shoe. sizing is true. I like velcro!!! You have the option of adding a clipless system to the bottom which is nice. Ill update the review as i ride them some.

I want a pair of the Reynolds now too!

One might be able to find reasonably-priced slim-outline dress shoes. Back in toe-clip days a courier friend wore lightweight leather dress shoes: they fit into toe clips easily but had sturdy enough soles for avg pedaling. AFAIK rather like old-time bike shoes. With toe clips one could add a leather cleat that would still allow for fairly comfortable walking.

Keens! Versatile for all weather with seal skins. At first I was using grocery bags as vapor liner in snow sleet rain day in May. This being my first long indefinite tour has taught me a lot.

+1 on big platform pedals, you can wear just about anything that you want then.
