Has anybody tried either of these things with a bike helmet, especially at road speeds 15-25mph...

I think I may want/need to trim the front brim to prevent-minimize problems with wind flipping it up or down. I'm ok with a minimal brim in the front (like a cycling cap). I'm on drop bars + keep them kind of low so the front of my face doesn't get a lot of sun typically.

What I'm really after is a wide enough brim on the sides and back, to keep the sun off the side of my face, ears, neck etc.

I rode with a lady last month who loved her sporty Da Brim. I don't know how she takes downhills, but she said she'd had no problems with the brim flopping or folding over on her face.

I've used Da Brim (Da Brim) on my recumbent bike and not had difficulties. It has some extra stabilizers and also fits pretty snugly around my helmet so doesn't really flop around. If wind is strong enough then I'll noticed it on my neck.

I rode with a rider on the Trans Am that had the Da Brim sport model. We both were Bruce Gordon R&R DF bikes. I have since bought one and wear it all the time here in AZ riding my SOMA Stanyan DF. Normally I ride early in the day and wear long sleeve jersey's and I get by without using sun screen. Besides shading my face, ears and neck it is great for keeping the early sun out of my eyes. When it rains it does a good job of keeping the glasses mostly dry.

I did wear it on tour in northern New Mexico (with cyclebum) in a hard hard wind and had to take it off. Felt like it almost ripped my head off in a strong gust. Later found it had snapped the helmet adjustment doohickey (Giro Innos). But I've never had a problem riding under 30 MPH downhill. BTW I got one hell of a sunburn on that tour.

I've a Da Brim.
I find my head gets buffeted by breezes that wouldn't normally be noticeable by me without it.
Saying that, for still days, I love it for keeping the sun off my fair skin as I burn and blister easily.
I've yet to tour with it but worry its going to be a pain to store without the risk of detrimental bending when its taken off my helmet on windy days.

There's also a couple of sun hats w/wide brims made to be worn under helmets, don't recall the name.

Another option, if the peak on the helmet is sufficient, is to look into a hood to wear underneath: that will protect the sides and back of your head/neck without having something hard protruding from underneath the helmet.

I've followed a cgoab blog of an older guy who has ridden in Mexico a lot and he used one. I can see how it works well but it is pretty cringe worthy looking.... But if you want to be serious about keeping the sun off you it makes sense that it works well.

This looks interesting and I can see using something like it (too old to let vanity get in the way of function) but I'd be concerned about it fitting on a bike helmet with a visor since it appears to be designed to fit a full-brim hard hat, not just something with a bill. Keep us posted.

I've seen outdoor workers in Florida use things like this too, seems like a sensible idea, just makes me wonder why outdoor workers in other areas don't use 'em since sun can be pretty intense in many parts of US in summer. This year I'm using long-sleeve summer jerseys; keeping the bright sun off arms seems to feel cooler besides mitigating UV damage. I also stopped clipping hair boot-camp short since I was getting sunburn thru helmet slots.

I think you can get away with some ignoring the sun in other places because the risk of skin cancer is deemed tolerable. Live in Oz or the south and you may know a little more about the subject.
Those brims look way to wind resistant. I don't know the perfect solution but if it isn't too hot thing like this might work.





There are also things for the arms. i get cheaper versions off the bay, but you get what you pay for if you don't have Asian dimensions.

My DaBrim (Sport model) is always mounted on my helmet. When my speed gets above 25mph, I can feel some buffeting but I don't often ride that speed except downhill. It's not a problem for me.

It protects my neck, ears and face from the sun. It's a quality product. I look goofy going down the road, I'm sure but I also don't care that I look goofy.

An old dish towel (corners rounded to reduce bulky fit under the helmet) tucked into shirt collar works well, for free. Easier, lighter and cheaper than sunblock, and more effective at UV protection.

Only downside is you look funny, but you already look funny to 99% of the population since to them you are an adult riding a child's toy.

I used a Da Brim Rezzo (front only, no rear overhang) on RAGBRAI this year and was very glad to have it. It proved useful on the two rainy days as well. Had some issues with wind buffeting on fast downhills (30+ MPH) but some work adjusting the strap fixed this.

I like the Explorer more than the Tourer because it has straps that connect to your helmet straps and prevents the legionnaires flap from lifting in the wind and exposing the parts you are trying to protect. This hat serves several purposes for me. (1) it protects from the sun (2) because it fits over the helmet it keeps stinging insects out of the helmet vents (3) keeps me significantly cooler and (4) keeps the ladies from mauling me when out and about and keeps strangers from bothering me https://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/lol.gif

I seriously considered the Da'Brim. I personally think it could be hazardous in an accident. The stiff brim could prevent the helmet from doing it job and could cause neck injuries. Just my take. The helmet hard hat thingamajig looks good and is inexpensive but I think that without a restraining strap it will flap in the wind and not provide full protection. Again, just my thoughts.

For the past 18 months, I've ridden with DaBrim (Sport model) always attached so I have some experience. The brim itself is stiff enough to do it's job but in no way is it stiff enough to cause an injury in case of a crash. Nor has it flopped or flapped into my field of view. Nice product. If I lost mine, I'd replace it immediately. However, it's probably not for those concerned with aerodynamics or those who regularly ride above 30mph. If you're sun-sensitive, it's a winner.

OP here. I bought this Ergodyne Chill-Its 6660 Hard Hat Brim $10 from ebay.

It works VERY well for me-
- GREAT shade/coverage on sides, ears, face, + back
- front is 2-1/2" (6cm) = long enuf to shade my face, short enuf to not obstruct visibility or catch much wind
- the tail in the back is small enuf to not obstruct the helmet-mount mirror view, and hung from the brim = keeps it off my neck = good airflow + not excessively hot
- stable in straight airflow, including longer downhills at 35+ mph
- minimal buffeting when trucks passing or crosswind

To get it on/around the helmet I cut about 1" out of the front of the brim. With that done it went on easily. I also melted 2 holes in the front brim + wired it to the helmet, to prevent it from blowing/sliding down. There's a piece that fits under the front of the helmet which prevents it from going up. The back fits tight into the back of the helmet, and has 2 velcro straps which loop around the helmet straps nicely.

After seeing this thread, I ordered the Da Brim online Friday and it was at my door Monday. I wear a XXL-XXXL Bern helmet and it fits it.

Looks like it will stay on in the wind as fast as I go. Do not have a field report yet...when I do I'll put some pictures on here if it's OK with the OP. I got the sport model in the high viz green/yellow. The only negative thing I see is the weight...I would think that they could source some lighter material and still maintain the stiffness so it doesn't flip flop in the wind. I still like it though.

It would be tough to store on the bike if you weren't wearing it, you could roll it but I am unsure as to what that would do to the hat.

I wear hardhats with similar sunshades and also quit baseball hats recently and went to hats that have a full brim so I am used to the big donut around my head.
