Are you planning on doing any camping? There are nice, cheap hike and bike campsites at Lake Perris a few miles from Riverside toward the Banning Pass, plus inexpensive campsites at Weist Lake east of Brawley.

As far as the route goes, Google maps has you inland from Salton Sea. I would go hwy 111 so you can see the sea. Also don't miss Salvation Mountain: Strange Geographies: Salvation Mountain | Mental Floss

The Lake Perris Hike 'n' Bike is only $4 a night, but you do have to take weather and security into consideration as compared to a motel room. It definitely beats a dry camp out in the desert, though.

Also consider a clockwise route around the Salton Sea instead of an out and back, that's more interesting, and there are hike and bike sites at the Salton Sea SRA on the east shore.

I personally would rather see the active mud volcanoes near Niland than a hill covered with toxic paint...or soak in the artesian hot pool on BLM land just outside of Holtville.

None anywhere near that route...and watch out where Google may send you through Banning Pass.

From riverside to Indio, go over highway 74 through Hemet up the hill into Garner Valley, then drop down into Palm Desert....and onto Indio. Nowhere good to camp in Indio, but head south and head into Box Canyon outside of Mecca for a nice ride and places to camp.
