I use suntour power thumb shifters, they are on bike #6 now. The bar end shifters, I have used only on a 9 speed cassette.

They are going 11 to get rid of the front derailleur. As the chain stay gets shorter and shorter, there is no room for a derailleur on the front any more
the FD Sora 3503 triple is 9speed on 2016 Surly LHT & DT is 9Speed FD and 2016 drive is 10speed

that is what they said in 2009. ) ¨9 speed is to flimsy go 7 speed¨

Xt 9 speed is good for touring, lasts a long time. Maybe I will trust Shimano with 11 speeds. I skipped over 10.

IMHO 11 speed is Overspending. whereas the 14 speed Rohloff is an investment.

Specialized K cassette has plenty of range when combined with a triple crank .

Yes

The question is will my friction shifters still work. My power thumb shifters should work. Maybe. Bar end shifters seem less precise, may the guy that said no has those. If you have trigger shifters you need new shifters to change the number of gears. I am going to find out. It could be that I will have to buy something else to make it work, maybe maybe not.

Going back to original post.
22 34 should be more than enough granny gear. 22 34 on a 26 inch wheel is a lower gear than 22 36 on a 29 inch wheel.
An xt 22 tooth chain ring is what $18?

Shimano is using a 30 tooth chain ring with the 11 42 cassette. For a double crank, they are using the 11 40 cassette, still with a 30 tooth chain ring.

I have a 28 40, I need a larger cassette.

No and Ask your LBS on 11speed! I see 11speed only works with 11speed parts and not cheap

I am using Raceface 22-32-42t 10Speed Chain Rings on Shimano Deore Crankset with 9Speed Sram PC-971 Chain and Sram PG-970 11-34t Cassette 9Speed with XT RD m770
and XT FD m770 and Shimano XT m770 thumb Shifters 9Speed

[QUOTE=Biketouringhobo;18564413]No and Ask your LBS on 11speed! I see 11speed only works with 11speed parts and not cheap

I did her is what Shimano says
Shimano FH-M9000 XTR Centerlock Rear Disc Hub

  • 135x10mm QR axle
  • 8/9/10/11-speed compatible
  • Angular contact bearings with high-quality double-contact seals
  • Quick engagement Titanium free hub
  • Center Lock rotor mounting
  • Not compatible with Shimano 11-Speed Road cassettes

it says not compatible with 11 speed road cassette
yes compatiable with 11 speed mt cassette

Shimano CS-M9001 XTR Cassette

  • Four carbon carriers and six titanium cogs for reduced weight
  • Nickel-plated finish for corrosion and wear resistance
  • Dyna-sys11 cassette with "Rhythm step" gearing for closer gear ratios and smoother shifting performance
  • 11-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-31-35-40 tooth cogs
  • Fits Dyna-sys11 and current Shimano 9/10-Speed MTB hubs
  • The largest cog (40t) is positioned inboard and above the drive-side flange, hubs with tall drive-side flanges may not be compatible due to spoke interference

It says yes
  • Fits Dyna-sys11 and current Shimano 9/10-Speed MTB hubs
