GPS, most recreational grade ones have a backlit screen, I do not know about the bike specific models. I use the recreational grade type GPS units. I try to avoid using the light on them, that consumes battery much faster.

But technically you can tour on any bike and you wanted a dynamo setup which could come on any bike and be what you might be looking for. Plus you did post it in the touring section so it is unlikely non-touring folks will post. You might also ask about dynamo set ups in the electronic/gadget section of the forum.

yes Veganbikes but what i said was im going to be building a touring bike come the new year ,
i already have a new carbon bike if i ride at night i use my battery lights..
theres some very clever bike builders on this forum i was hoping to see photos of the dynamo system they use and clever ways to wire it up.
like for instance would it be a bad idea to run the cable through the frame which would mean drilling holes in the frame and fork ,Cables on my road bike are all internal makes for a very neat bike.
i searched utube for ways of doing this (drilling frame) but no luck, i know what dynamo i want Shimano/ Primium light Bush n Muller 80lux and rear toplight.
anyway thanks for your input most appreciated.

cheers MSN that's why i asked either it was a big no no or should be fine.
when i'm putting a bike together i like to get it as good as it can possible be bit of a geek like that lol.
i really don't like cables all over the place , the new shimano 105 is more like campag as in all the cables are hidden on the bars, great idea .so if i can hide the dynamo cables great if not i might just use the battery B&M toplight.

when I had a wired taillight on my rear mudguard, I used the housing liner over the FD cable down the down tube,
wound the wire over that .. cable slipped inside it just as if it were not there. short loop under the BB,
then ran the wire hot melt glued inside the mudguard to the taillight.. with low battery draw LED taillights, I got to remove all that..
Summer Tour Bike, plenty of daylight ..
though the bike (s) I use in the winter have Hub dynamos .. And I dont sweat the visuals of wire to the taillight ..

If you are buying an off the shelf frame talk to a local frame builder about adding eyelets and holes for wiring.

You can't see my dynamo, it's in the front wheel; a wire runs on the hidden side of the fork leg up to the headlight and then to the tail light. The wire is black, and you can see it running under the down tube and you can see it on the left side rear fender stay.
I run a second wire from the dynamo to a cheap converter that has one USB outlet. I can use that to run a GPS, charge a phone or other battery, etc. The box and whatever it's charging sits in the pannier (you can see the wire running into the pannier from the other side), except for the GPS that goes on the mount on the handlebar.
Add rear panniers, and we're ready to tour.
I'm probably going to add a very small front rack --one of the ones that attaches to the front brake-- to hold all the electronics. But I haven't got to doing that yet.

I run mine with some heat shrink tubing along the rear brake cable:
IF wired for lights. Have a bit more tweaking to do. Cable from headlight to tail light follows the brake cable. Shrink tubing keeps it together. by Mike, on Flickr

Here's my last setup:
2014 Ridley Fenix, Shimano 10 speed 105, no idea what gears and **** but it's a compact double up front. Stock except for bar tape, tires and replacement rear wheel. Riding 25mm Gatorskins at the moment.
I'm experimenting with different frame bags and handlebar bags so I don't have all my gear in the Viscacha. I like the bag, it was just a little wobbly being that fully loaded.
Total weight in that pic is around 30lbs.
