Suggestions for tours?

I live outside of Philadelphia and am looking for suggestions for self supported tours. I do not have a car so I will need to get to the start and finish by bus or train. I like tours with a historical bent. I have done the Erie Canal twice. Last year I did Cape Cod and a short Ontario trip. Three years ago I did Montreal to Quebec city. Any suggestions of a good trip?

St Louis to Seaside Oregon, The Louis and Clark 'Trail' ( though they used the rivers as Much as they could. )

The Lewis and Clark Trail Read their Journals Before you go or read up as You Go..

Get yourself to Pittsburgh, ride the GAP to Cumberland then head north to Bedford and take PA Bike Route S (modified) to Philly and/or home. The GAP itself is rather historic. You can ride the abandoned section of the PA Turnpike east from Breezewood, take a detour to Gettysburg and even check out Valley Forge. Or from Cumberland you could take the C&O Canal Path to D.C. and then ride home.

Fly To Europe *, they have a lot longer history than their Colonies

Unless You have an Intrest in Pre Columbian american History.

*AMS Shiphol is the easiest one to use of the major terminals (with best Ticket Prices)

Newark to Gatwick is an alternative to land Outside London LHR..

I discovered you can drag the boxed bike on the train and leave it in 'Left Luggage' at the Station in London ,
while you find lodging, But not if you Un Box it when you arrive at the airport .

Not far from home you have lots of options, Antietam, Harpers Ferry, Gettysburg. Heck there are so many battlefields around you that you could go to, its incredible. If you want something more along the lines of how things used to be done go for Williamsburg, VA.

You haven't given any general clue as to where you might want/be willing to travel to.

A few of the Adventure Cycling options come to mind...
  • Bicycle Route 66
  • Lewis & Clark
  • Underground Railroad
  • GAP and C&O

You can get to and from any of them by train, plane, or bus. Also you say you don't have a car, but if you have a license a rental may also be an option.

GAP and C&O are historic, beautiful, and convenient for you. Harpers Ferry, Antietam, more...

Ted Herman's "Pittsburg to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania July 2007"
He rides the Great Allegheny Passage to the C&O Canal, exiting at Williamsport, MD and continuing up through Gettysburg
https://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/?...c_id=2765&v=4r

Or you could Amtrak it to DC then ride the C&O/GAP to Pittsburgh then on to Philly.

No car, why do you need a bus or train? Try this, pedal from home all day. Rest. Get up, repeat until you are far enough from home. Turn around, pedal home a different way. Ever been to Cape May, The Appalachian mts or Allegany forest? I live North of Boston, MA. Most of my tours involve rolling down my driveway. And then your vacation starts, not traveling for a day or more by other transportation. I have explored most of MA, Some of CT and NH, some of ME. Still need to get over to VT by bike though.

A++++++++++++++++++++

With the money you save by not having to take the bus/train/plane you can stay out for longer periods of time by just riding roundtrip from home. I do it every summer and hit every state east of the Rockies this past year on a big roundtrip ride from my front door.

Thanks everybody for the information. I looked up the GAP/C&O and it looks very interesting. For some reason I find canals very fascinating. When I was in Ontario I followed the Welland and Rideau canals. John

Adventure Cycling Association's Atlantic Coast route has a D.C. spur and goes up to Conshohocken with a spur into Philly. Also, you can now take your bike un-boxed on the Capitol Limited train from D.C. to Pittsburgh.
