I have one. Love it. Find one that allows pass-through charging. That lets you plug the battery in to the wall, and still charge your phone at the same time. Great for quicker stops in town.

I have a RavPower 7800 mAh, which I bought on sale for $15 from Amazon. For me, an important consideration was that it will charge my iPad at 2.4 amps. I read that higher capacity power banks don't charge well off dynos, like my Son28, so I passed up higher capacity units till I see how well this one charges.

I've been using this for auxiliary power to a small camera which does not have battery capacity to last a 2+ hour ride: https://www.anker.com/products/A1214011

I have a Allpowers 23,000 MaH solar panel/battery bank Robot Check . It can be charged either by the sun or a wall outlet. I have only used it so far to charge my phone and bike lights a few time, but seems to do the trick. Only time will tell if it can charge a laptop each night.

I have used many power banks and most of them are not really suitable for on the go charging, the system I have lets me ignore 110v power outlets nearly entirely.
I did a video on the system including the battery packs a while back (Sept 2014), all of the parts in the video are still in use.
You can find that on you tube here -----> ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WALKTHROUGH

That is true, as I charge from a SON28 and a small solar panel. I have a Voltaic Fuse panel and a Voltaic V15 battery pack in it. These are perfectly designed for charging from a hub as well since the circuitry is made to deal with various amounts of input current. i.e Riding really slow is the same as a cloudy day, the battery don't care and it will take whatever charge you give it, they are designed with that scenario in mind. It also allows pass through charging, I use that as a buffering feature most of the time.

Having said that, my experience is extremely limited. I went for a 34-mile ride yesterday and hooked up my 3/4-depleted RavPower to the Son28 through my Cinq5 headtube for the first time. I'm old and slow, so I didn't get much charge--maybe up to 1/2 depleted. Riding for a while with a guy on a road bike with a Garmin unit, I can report that at about 12 mph my Cinq5 would flicker on and off, and at 14-15 mph I got a steady current, though I only maintained that speed for about 5 miles as we rode together--me pedaling hard on my Ogre, him coasting half the time on his skinny-tired Trek. (With nothing attached to the Cinq5, it lights up at very slow speeds. 4-6 mph?) I just got a Garmin Edge 25 in the mail yesterday, so I'll be able to monitor speed/cadence on my own now. So, what is your experience charging with the Son28?
Another question. How do you like your dyno-powered headlight? A lot of reviews I have read suggested that none of them--with the possible exception of some very expensive German brand--produce enough light to be safe at night. So, for now, I'm using a usb rechargeable headlight from Planet Bike. (Edit correction: Portland Design Works.)
Thank you in advance for any information that you or other members would care to share with me!

Agreed , The V15 is the smallest of their fleet. The point (which you got) is that these have a charge circuit designed to take a variable input.
As for the headlight, I'm a firm believer that getting to camp before beer o'clock is important so it is more for letting me be seen. I have had those days where plan A, B and C all fell apart and I was on the road after dark. The Ixon is a very capable light if the batteries are topped off ( mine usually are since it gets so little use), I cannot honestly attest to it's performance if relying on a depleted battery pack and running on genhub power alone. My comment in the video about having "unlimited front light" was in hindsight technical speculation. I WILL test that as soon as the snow melts or when I get out for the CO/GAP ACA tour in May.
I'm a Clyde so my speed is laughable (except on descents). That being said I can get the full 3 watts out of the hub at about 8 mph. That increases the limit of my tablet by 2.5X. If I was running a iPad with a bigger screen the .5 amp input would not have as much effect. All of this is "mathable" find your devices mAH capacity, run time, and shift it by .5 amps per hour. Allow about 15-20% for transmission and conversion loss and you will be in the ballpark for total runtime.

According to the Cinq5 site (FAQs), the green light indicates that the full 5 volts is available. However, it really seems to depend on the attached device, and not just my speed as it lights up at much lower speeds with no load attached. I will have to do some testing now that I have the Edge 25 and can see my speed with different devices attached--RavPower, Nook, Planet Bike light, iPad, etc.
Oh yeah, I suppose I'm a clyde, at 225 lbs, at least if a linebacker body is considered a clyde.

I picked up a solar charger with battery backup last summer. It was OK, although it would auto turn itself off when there was no power drain, and my phone complained about overheating with both charging and discharging, and riding in the HOT sun, and being in a case. So, I have some tuning to do.
So far, most of my rides have been long, hard one-day rides, so I can do fairly well with carrying spare batteries.

I'm not sure, I'll have to test that out. I did some new research on it and it gets mixed reviews. A lot of people say that it only works briefly or not at all. I've only used it a few times and it worked fine for me. I'll have to do the pass-through test and also do a laptop test (once I get one) before I recommend it to someone. If it works then it's a great value.
