Rebuilt Marin Pine Mountain MTB touring bike

I've finally finished rebuilding my early 1990's Marin Pine Mountain mtb. I bought it for $55 from a thrift store and have added approx. $100 to replace the BB and shifters plus some parts I already had.

When I bought it, one shifter was broken and we had to remove the original BB with an impact wrench from an automotive tire shop, but other than that the bike was in pretty good shape. I stripped the frame to metal and tried my hand at an asymetrical camoflauge paint job with a lacquer top coat. I also wrapped the top tube with some bar tape to avoid kicking the brake cable (which runs through a sleeve under the tape). Added trekking bars, bottle cages, fenders and the bike weighs 25lb as is. Down the road I plan to add a different rack system and some new tires.

Chromoly frame
Shimano Deore XT components
Araya RM17 rims with Deore XT hubs
Shimano UN-55 BB
Ritchey head set
44/36/24 triple crank
28T 7 speed freewheel cassette
Shimano RF shifters
Cantilever brakes

I tried to post some pics but the file sizes were too big so I put them into a video:

Today I took it out for it's first long ride (aside from commuting to work). This is a video of that:

That's a great build and I really enjoyed the video. That's also impressively lightweight for an old mtb.

To me it is too. 10 lb's less than an almost identically sized Raleigh I ride.

Nice build. I was planning to do something similar, but decided against it since I know nothing about bikes and didn't have a lot of build time. Sometimes the best bikes are the cheap ones built with a little love.

Great looking bike! I have a Marin Bear Valley SE that I put trekking bars and a rack on as well and it's kicked butt for over a year now. They don't make them like they used to, these steel frames an take a beating and last forever.
