If your sandals or touring shoes are comfortable to walk in, are they so flexy as to offer little support for the soles of your feet?
disclaimer! I did mention a have a foot problem that needs very stiff shoes.

I tour in walkable mt. bike shoe with recessed cleats. They could function fine for lighter walking. I do like to get out of those to give my feet a change and to let the shoes air out. I take either a pair of Teva sandals or a very light pair of New Balance minimalist running shoes. Both or comfy and adequate for hiking.

The Nashbar sandals are more flexible than the Shimano ones overall. The Shimano ones were stiff enough for me to get up 26% switchbacks standing on Ebbets Pass in the Sierra, but they flex ahead of the pedal contact (toes) in order to make them comfortable for walking.

Anyway, I was replying to the 'Box's question, as should have have been obvious.
I had no trouble taking public transportation in the SPD sandals or SPD mountain bike shoes, or hiking up a freaking volcano. If you have some sort of trouble walking in what basically are just fracking SHOES for the very short distances required to ride Amtrack or a bus, there are employees there that can provide assistance.
Have you ever done a tour yet? Are you still rejecting advice from those that have done quite a few?

I have Teva Pivot SPD Shoes
I don't understand the logic. Besides being slightly stiffer than regular shoes, a lot of the commuter style SPD's (aka not carbon soled racing shoes) are functionally the same as any other shoe out there. I personally run these, do multi mile hikes, walk in stores and have worn them at work for an entire day, they don't feel that much different that my regular shoes.

Thats my point, save the $100 and just use one pair of close toed shoes for it all. I am not familiar with those DH/BMX shoes, but they are probably overkill for bike touring, heavy, stiff etc. Getting something lighter weight (similar to what I linked, there are many others) is what I have done for years. If you want something you can wear in showers/around camp, I'd get a cheap pair of flip-flops.

Yes, sandals are great camp/Amtrak/bus shoes. My feet sweat a lot, which is why I like sandals for both cycling and non-cycling use, plus they are so comfortable on the bike, but take the Tevas you have.
I never had any problem riding in open-toe SPD sandals--consider your fragile fingers also being much more exposed while on the bike.
