Threadless headset height help

Hi,

Im getting my touring bike ready for this summer, But have a problem with the handlebar height.
MY bike's an old GT CrMo mountain bike, I absolutely love this bike, and I think its perfect for some touring. Problem is its a little small, 18", but I am 6' tall, so I've got to boost the seat up, but now the handlebars are far too low.
The bike has 1 1/8" threadless headset, now my question is, would it be better to get a big high-rise stem like 130mm, 45 deg. or go for a headset extender? Any reasons to favour one or the other? Ideally I need a few inches of height.
Thanks for any help.

Headset extender spook me. I use a a 130 45 degree stem and love it. You might be able to pick up a new fork for under 60 bucks or so and stack some spacers on the steerer tube as well. Too many spacers and it looks a little goofy though, IMO.
