I'm not positive but AFAIK current Aliante saddles have either carbon rails or "K:ium" rails. K:ium sounds like it would be a type of titanium but is said to be actually steel alloy. BTW there are different Aliante sub-models: besides rail choice there are different shapes, for instance some have a channel & others don't.

Yeah, leather gets most attention but fit is #1. There's so many synthetic saddles for touring that we don't hear of any one make/model as being a resounding favorite. I'm using SQ-Labs 610 Active saddle that's designed for drop-bar touring & it's proving to be pretty comfortable. I'd urge folks to investigate SQ-Labs saddles that have a lot of good features esp the overall design which minimizes compression of soft tissues, good for both males/females.

synthetic saddle with right fit & padding can work great too. Just today I saw an old guy w/new CF Serotta with exotic noseless wide saddle, might have been the type with independent side pivot. My SQ-Labs 610 Active is turning out pretty good. Sides flex w/adjustable elastomer dampeners; sit-bone area is fairly well padded but nose is narrow & dropped to avoid squishing soft bits, helps for both males/females.
I am going to look at these SQ-Labs saddles sounds like they have some good ideas, thanks!

I see lots of older folk here in the UK with really good/expensive touring bikes with Selle San Marco Rolls saddles.... these guys have pannier bags etc on their bikes and it looks like they cycle long distances

I had an anatomica on my 520. Put about 1500 miles on it. It required tensioning until it couldn't be tensioned any more. I replaced it with a B17 and have been happy ever since. Pads or no pads.
