Surly 54cm LHT niggle...

Hi all,

I have a new LHT with a 54cm frame and 26" wheels fitted with Schwalbe Marathon Plus 26 x 1.50 - I also have SKS mudguards. However the problem is that the front break pinches and sits on the mudguard - so when I brake pushes the guard against the tire wall. This is super annoying and I imagine would only be worse with a 1.75 or 2.00 sized tire - which I want to get at some stage. Anyone experienced this problem with the LHT and mudguards? I guess I could hacksaw the muguard back but that would look a bit untidy. Any other ideas?

Cheers

First things first, what kind of brake are you dealing with? Traditional cantilevers, or linear pull brakes? And of those subsets, are the cantilevers wide-profile, or low profile? Are the linear pulls long arm or short arm (road STI levers)?

If it is V brakes, you might want to get a brake with a longer arm.

I had a problem with brakes rubbing on my fenders on one of my bikes. I put on longer brake arms, Tektro 857AL and that solved my problem. The bike I changed brakes on is not a Surly, thus my brake setup is likely different than yours.

First photo is a "before" on my front brake with a brake cable rubbing on my fender and second photo is "after" on my rear brake.

If however your brakes are pushing on the side of the fenders, not the problem I described above, look at the brake pad mounting. Can you shift the spacers around on your brake pad mounts to put more space between the brake arm and pad?

I , again tout Magura HS 33 rim brakes (trekking bars) booster arches offer plenty of clearance.

Easiest to just trim the mudguards & it won't be too noticeable with the brakes next to it. This week I got 50 mm/2" Marathon Supremes for the DT vs prev 38 mm/1.5" Tom Slicks & the Supremes feel awesome. Light, comfy, roll fast & handle great. In re wider tires most folks think about the cushion factor but as a Supreme reviewer noted, a wider tire handles road imperfections better & safer. Time will tell if flat resistance is good.

Even with the heavier Marathon Plus I'd move to 50 mm which I think is only about 20% heavier than the 38 mm/1.5" Plus.

Yeah, like I said above, longer brake arms. Look at the ones you have and decide how much longer they have to be if you install the bigger tires you might want, and buy some that are long enough. That chart at the link I listed above is not very complete but it was complete enough for me to find ones that would work for me.
