El Camino Santiago

Trying to figure trips for next year. I would like to know if you have done El Camino Santiago on touring/road bikes what were the villages you intersected so I could plan the right bike route. Thanks a bunch. I'm figuring 10 days?

Which Camino? There are several Caminos throughout Iberia converging in Santiago de Compostela. I'd look to one of the alternative ones, rather than the standard northern route. Better yet, I'd start in Spanish Andalucia (in Ronda, the prettiest town in all of Spain) or Portuguese Algarve, and ride up, south to north through Portugal. The traditional northern route has too many gringos already.

Have you done multiple routes? Please list the waypoint villages on the routes you have undertaken. Thanks

(We walked the Voie du Puy 2 years ago, and prepared for the Camino Frances but changed our minds and walked the Voie d'Arles, instead, such that I cannot offer a first person account).

1. google maps provides a routing option that closely follows the Camino Frances (the most popular pilgrimage route).

2. One of the most useful guides is the Miam-Miam Dodo, which lists all accommodations on the CF. It is in French, but arguably easy to decipher for those who aren't fluent. These guides are updated each year.

3. You'll probably find everything you need in this Santiago di Compostela forum

------

I would not attempt to ride the official pilgrimage route for a few reasons, among them the fact that some sections are next to impossible to ride (mountain trails meant for hiking) and, maybe more importantly, for consideration for the walking pilgrims. But it is certainly possible to ride something quite similar, including long walking sections that are nothing more than road shoulders.
