I'm trying to find a safe route from richmond, va to augusta, maine. I'm hoping to make stops in baltimore, philly, new york city, and boston. Hopefully a couple of other places between boston and maine as well. I haven't been able to find any maps for this. Also if anyone has some suggestions for this trip i'd love the help.
This is but a small portion of your planned journey-
but I have done the New York-Boston leg, in reverse.
The posting dealing with this is here:
New York to Boston?
The Connecticut part of this took some research and turned out really nice.
Are you familiar with the Adventure Cycling Association? Among the large collection of touring maps available, the Atlantic Coast route may be of help to you.
As well as Adventure Cycling, check out theEast Coast Greenway. Although incomplete, it will give you general (and some very specific) routing.
I cycled a bit of the Maine route 2 years ago. I drove up to Freeport ME and parked at the LL Bean store (with permision), and cycled north to Acadia National Park. I followed (for the most part) the very detailed cue sheets provided by the Maine Dept of Transportation. I then hopped a bus back to near Freeport (the same bus continues on to Boston). If your time permits I highly recommend heading up to Acadia, or at least to Camden. Camden is about as North as Augusta, yet is on the coast-and is a very nice scenic town-with a state park&camping.
The Maine DOT cue sheets take you rite by some very cool spots (Lighthouses etc) as well.
Time permiting, cycle Cape Cod for a bit. You can take a ferry over to Martha's Vineyard (worth a couple days)-there is camping as well as a very nice Hostel on the Island. You may also be able to "skip" cycling some of Cape Cod and hop a ferry to Martha's Vineyard from ?New Bedford if your legs need a break/short on time. If you then cycle the Cape all the way to Provincetown, you can hop a ferry to Boston from there.

One less car
I've ridden through Augusta, ME before, I can recommend various things. I used the ACA's Atlantic Coastal Route from basically New Paltz, NY to Kittery ME, but then used my own knowledge of how to get to New Paltz and how to get to Augusta. Basically after Kennebunk, we turned inland to go camp at Sebago Lake, then we travelled towards Augusta, going through the twin cities and then to Augusta where my friend had an Aunt there. Then we headed back to the coast to a friend's place in Stockton Springs before heading back inland to Bangor and eventually to Orient, ME.
I don't have time these days to check these forums that much anymore but if you need any more info on places to stay and stuff, send me an email, or about the route, crossing CT, whatever...
If you are interested, I have 2 extra maps of sections 2 and 3 of the Adventure Cycling maps which goes up from Richmond. I was going to sell these on Ebay and I only paid $8.00 each. Send me an email if you want them as I have no use for them.
I can offer help in the western ma/ southern vermont are where I live. The berkshires to the green mountains throught the white mountains and onto the coast of maine is beautiful
and I totally agree with Camden being the prettiest town in Maine. Cliffas rae amazing, bed & breakfasts have rooms hanging over the edges of the cliffs. very nice.
