I Stole My Surly LHT

Well, at least I think I stole it.

Saw it on Craigslist. Got it for $600. Came with a handlebar bag, Brooks saddle, which looks brand new, and a set of new fenders not on the bike. It also came with two spare Bontrager tubes, the original seat - which also appears to never have been sat upon, and a seat rain cover. It also has Planet Bike Protege 9.0, and front and rear Cateye strobes.

How did I do?

Yes, in fact I doubt I will have to change the seat or bar position at all!

I just ordered a Tubus Logo Evo rear rack for it. I'm going to ride it for a bit so I can determine what may or may not work for handlebar options. I like the Salsa shallow drop bars, but I am intrigued by the Jones Loop bars also.

I have zero miles on a Brooks Flyer. Guess I'll have to see where it takes me. If I dont like it, I can always let the wife have it. She's infatuated with the springs.

26" wheels. Been a looooong time since I rode anything that small.

Stoked. Its been a while since I had a decent bike. The last good bike I had was a brand new Bianchi Volpe in 2002, but I traded it for a S&W .44 magnum revolver last year. Despite the obvious value difference, I've missed that bike terribly! Gonna put me some miles on this'un heah!

You may not have to do this, but I did...this is the Tubus Cargo Evo on the same bike. Do your dropouts look like mine? I wated the rack mounted in that position, on the upper holes. I have fenders on the lower ones.

Notice I took a file to the rack to keep it from rubbing on the bike (and to level the rack), where the rack tubing comes down on the left side...see how it's at 45* compared to the right side? Your rack may be different, but something to look out for. I didn't want to use a bunch of spacers and I am handy at doing stuff like this. Already had some black spray paint around to touch up the end. Your rack might fit OK.

Dropouts are the same as yours. I'll have no reservations about filing, chopping, bending, coercing, cajoling, pleading and insisting that the rack fits.

Hey clean bike! Nice!

why does it seem stolen...because its cheaper than what you would expect? Thats all i can guess would be the reason and if thats the case, i seem to think what you seem to think is a stretch.

I assume that the OP thinks he got a good deal on the bike. He did.

Its not stolen. The guy was asking $750. I got it for $600. Finding deals on CL is my obsession, not to mention the fact that I have a bachelors in Marketing Science. I once did a brief stint (3 months) at a chevy dealership. I made salesman of the month the second and third months, and raked in $26k. I'm almost as passionate about buying selling and trading as I am bicycles.

I guess the thief stole the original saddle to include in the sale, too. Sneaky.

I use black nail polish to touch up my rack wear spots. THat would work well if you do the filing you might do for the rack at the dropouts.

I don't think Jones bars work well on a 'properly' fit road bike. I say 'properly' because if you are comfortable with the setup you have with comfortable reach, using a MTB bars on a road bike can be a compromise. With that said, I had some on my LHT, but the top tube was a longer than normal to compensate. Even at that, it never felt quite right, even though I did a multi day tour with them. They did feel good on my MTB though, which had a much longer TT....but it seems to work for some folks so YMMV.

In my experience there is no such thing as a rack that doesn't require employing 3 or more of those things to achieve fit. Lol

Nice bike, super deal. Happy touring!

I think I can agree with you... a lot!

Jones bars would put me more upright, but after many miles of riding I am convinced that my sit bones -and legs- are not as happy. To me, a decent fit means I'm leaning over a little and my sit bones take the brunt of the gravitational force which is an unfortunate effect of body by beer. My taint also absorbs a little pressure, and I try to balance out the pressure on my hands and butt nearly-equally, maybe 60/40 with the most on my seat. No, I'm definitely into drop bars for the long haul... trucker.

Does this make sense?
