KATY Trail extended to Pleasant Hill
Someone has probably posted this already, but I just noticed a report (Katy Trail opening at Pleasant Hill brings the rail-to-trail patch closer to a cross-Missouri biking avenue | The Kansas City Star) that the Katy trail was extended by 47.5 miles, almost reaching Kansas City.

Hmm. Touring the KATY next August 21 would be fun.

Your more than welcome to come in August but three words come to mind: hot, humid and crunchy dead grass. Well, that's about 5 words. Missouri hillbillies get strange enough during a full moon...no telling what will go down August 21. If you here banjos, act like you got a pack of wild dogs chasin' ya and pedal fast, very fast!

Edit: I meant to add that my playing would induce wild dogs and possibly offended banjo players into driving me far away...

I have pleasant memories of staying at a fishing resort in the Ozarks as a teen. Of course, I didn't hear any banjos...I might have tried joining in with one of my harmonicas.

It would be interesting to know how crowded the Katy might be on the eclipse. I have been pondering going up there for it, in the hope that I could see it in an isolated area. Plus I now have to ride the new part.

I still want to ride the Katy, but I might just drive over for the eclipse unless I can budget for sleeping in some a/c. Riding in heat is one thing, I rode in plenty of +90F weather this year, but I am getting too old for sleeping in it.

No, I haven't ridden any of it. I had planned on riding it last May/June but broke a couple ribs. In my first year of riding I only managed one very short tour of 3 days and 2 nights around the Indiana Dunes and along the east coast of Lake Michigan. Frankly, the heat/humidity/mosquitos were awful in August when I camped. Never cooled down at night, and I made the mistake of rinsing out my jersey and bike shorts after cycling about 35 miles to the Dunes. They were still wet the next morning...

Not to send the thread off course but I have a friend who swears by one of those tiny battery operated fans on those hot nights. I would be interested to see if anyone else has ever used those with success.
btw, the Katy with the new section from Kansas City to Windsor is on the to do list this year.
