2006 Trek 520 17" or 19"?

Hello Everyone,

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for quite some time now for a slightly older Trek 520 (one of the US made ones from 2000s) for touring and found a 19" frame for sale. Comparing the specs to my favorite current bike, a 49cm Specialized Tricross, the 19" Trek gives me a tad more standover and has a shorter seat tube than the other bike. The top tube is longer but the slacker seat tube angle should help bring that in bounds. I see from the old Trek spec sheet that the 17" only has a 5mm shorter top tube.

Is anyone a 5'4" male and riding a 19" 520? The 17" would yield about 2" more exposed seat post so not sure if that would make the bars too low. I can't look at either of these frames in person so if any shorter people have any insight that would be great! I searched for quite a while but really didn't find that much infor comparing the sizes.

Cheers!

If you will post all the dimensions that you have available, someone may be able to help. WAG, the 19 is more likely to fit, 17 is an awfully small bike, assuming traditional sizing.

yellowsocks93, Welcome to the forum.

Do you have a chance to ride either bike? This would be a tough call for anyone to help with over the inter net, even with a geometry chart. 19" is close to 49 cm, but frames from different companies may not be measured at the same points. For example virtual TT length and actual TT length. You could fit the smaller frame, but have toe overlap issues...

Thanks guys, I probably should have just posted the specs right away! Looks like the 19" is more similar to what I already ride and my other 2 bikes have similar standover and top tube lengths. I have a 29" PBH.

I am unable to ride either bike as it would be an internet purchase so just trying to see what the other smaller guys have for the 520!

Any advice appreciated!

Specialized:

ST: 490mm
STA: 75.5 degrees
Effective TT: 515
Stand Over: 748
Head Tube: 110

520 19/17"

ST: 483/432mm
STA: 74/74 degrees
Effective TT: 545/540
Stand Over: 727/697
Head Tube: 90/90

Obviously, both 520s have much longer top tubes and shorter head tubes than your current bike. Weird you don't gain any head tube with the larger Trek. I don't really see either being a great fit if you like what you are now riding.

yellowsocks93, If you feel you have to pick either bike quickly, go with the 19". TT length is going to partially reflect upon the different ETT length.

Best of luck.

Well, I ended up going with the 19" 520. I'll post back after I get it fitted with the results!
