Is this a good bike for a small to medium tour?

Hi Guys,
I live in Berlin, Germany. I am planning on a 5 day cycle tour for late spring in Poland. This is the bike I have at the moment. It is a Peugeot Milano New. My question is - is this bike suitable for that kind of distance and time?

It feels comfortable to ride and it seems that I can put paniers on the side to convert it to a touring bike.

Any tips on what I could do to this would be massively appreciated.

Many thanks,
Tim

I agree. It looks like it can accept a rack for front panniers, should you wish to use them. How much weight do you plan to carry and will you be camping?

Hey Brad, thanks for the response! Yes will definitely be camping the entire time. At the moment I don't have much gear but am planning on gearing up over the summer.

great I will start looking for a front rack and suitable paniers.

No reason it can't be, especially if you already own it and are comfortable on it. ATB/MTB to touring conversions are all over these boards, I'm working on one right now.

It has lights, fat tires, and a rack. That's a good start. The gearing might be an issue (only one chain ring up front and the rear cassette does not look that large) especially if riding in a lot of hills but worse case scenario is that you walk some of them. For a trip like this I would not worry about this but it is something to keep in mind if you decide you like bike touring and decide to do more.

Welcome!

Where are you riding in Poland? Your bike should do fine.

You might want some better grips on your handlebar. Something with a bigger diameter and softer. Maybe some Ergon grips? Long days riding puts the hurt on the hands. Do you wear gloves?

Pretty sure that there are multiple chainrings up front. At least...there are two shift cables and it looks like the chainguard is designed around a front mech.

No, but I have ridden from Berlin almost to Poznan before turning south to Wroclaw, and then into the Czech Republic.

Poland was a great place to ride. Things are relatively inexpensive, and the people are warm and friendly. There is a bike route from Berlin to Poznan. We accidently stumbled onto it, and it turned out to be a decent route. Search online for Eurovelo Route 2, which is also marked as one of Germany's long distance routes: D-Route 3/ Europaradweg R1 It continues into Poland.

Good luck on your ride!

People have ridden on sports-type bicycles for decades for touring and cycle-camping.

Just about any bike can be made into a touring bike - imagination is sky's the limit with what you choose to tour.

Agree with this comment, an additional hand position may be good, bar ends or something. I find different hand positions the only think I can never have enough of when cycling for a few days
