I met a man who was finishing a cross country ride beginning in San Francisco while I was riding from Pittsburgh to DC. We rode together for a few days and have been friends ever since. For that tour, he flew to San Francisco with his seat and pedals, and some bags, and bought a cheap bike at Walmart. He replaced the crank and went with a triple in Ohio when it gave him problems. He actually thought he might have to replace the entire bike along the way, but it performed well and when he finished, he gave it to a kid who had no bike. The Huffy will most likely do fine for a week long tour. I see bikes like that all the time going between Pittsburgh and Washington DC. Just be sure it is in good shape, and possibly get the spokes detensioned, and retensioned, and rims trued in the process if you are really wary about the wheels.
