Outdoor/topo GPS unit that is good for touring?
I don't really want a GPS unit that's only good for bike touring. I do a lot of hiking so I want something I can use for both hiking and cycling. I bought an Garmin eTrex 30x, and loaded a small openfietsmap map onto it, and it kept running out of memory during route calculation, even with a 10 mile route.
I could upgrade my phone to a 3000mAh battery with decent water protection (and I could download any app for any activity), but with phones, you have to turn it bright to see the screen outside, and you can't turn off the backlight to save battery. What GPS unit would you recommend, that would allow me to do hiking as well as touring, and has the ability to import routable maps?

Garmin 60 series - I have a decade+ old 60csx, I think it's up to 64 now. I've loaded half the US street and topo on one SD card, other half on another card, runs 2-3 days on 2AA (use Eneloops) or 12V, backlit or natural light screen, waterproof, turn-by-turn auto routing, etc, etc. I use it for auto, motorcycling, bicycle, hiking, and kayaking (marine maps incl w/topo my area). It's one tough unit to handle motorcycle handlebar mounting for many, many years.

I also have a 60csx. I've downloaded National Geographics, USGS Topo maps on it and they are great for off-road activities. I also have Garmin's U.S. 24K West topo maps. I use it mainly for work, ski patrol activities, backcountry skiing, back packing, and climbing. I don't use it much for touring now because our phones are just about as good and are faster to use. However, for real exploring, I down loaded City Navigator Europe NT and City Navigator North America NT on the 60 csx, and they are good resources.
