Are there places to stop overnight in the desert on the Western Express?

Any tips about going from East to West from Colorado to San Francisco. Concern about getting safely through the desert.

Started out in Yorktown, VA but changed course at Pueblo, CO due to the fires in Montana and Idaho.

This page has 5 links to information about the Western Express Route. They don't all deal with places to stop for the night, but they all are about the route.
