Where to get used wheels
Hello all,
I am building a touring bike and am looking for a wheelset. The ones that I consider good quality are very expensive. I would much rather go with used, but I am having a hard time finding 700c wheels. I've checked ebay and craig's list. Anyone know of any other routes to follow?

Um.... build your own? Hey, if you're building a bike, ya certainly got what it takes to build your own wheels. Just tonight I built up a rear wheel for touring: 36h, XT hub, all new parts that I gathered over the past few months. Cost less than $60, including double-butted DT spokes and nipples. (I've been shopping Nashbar sales.... but if you're patient you can find 'em anywhere.)
I could've saved a few buck with LX, but it's for my wife -- only the best

I've been considering that, but don't know that much about individual components. I would love to build up my own wheels, but I thought that was more expensive.

There are excellent buys on wheels from time to time on nashbar.com , but the thing that strikes me about the value of wheels is how much of the value is in how well the wheel was built. You can get great components built up by machine, but the wheel will go out of true quickly, while a well-built (by hand) wheel with the same components could last near forever. As far as buying a used wheel, you will know little about the build and less about the maintenance. If the wheel was well-built, you may be getting it after it has been worn out (either bearings or braking surface). Better to buy a cheap nasbar wheel and retrue it yourself.

I saw this in their printed Summer 2005 mailer. I couldn't locate it on-line.
There's (supposedly) a 20% discount going on for totals over $75. You could get another 10% off if you're a TeamPerformance member. That brings the price for the pair at around $80!!!
