Does anyone have any expereince with putting an Arkel hook system on an Ortleib pannier? The back plate of Ortleib seems to be rather flimsy. Was this an issue? Thanks.

Hi.
I have both Arkel and Ortlieb bags. Personally I've never had problems with either the Arkel or the Ortlieb attachment system. I use an Ortlieb bag for daily commuting including some offroad technical singletrack.
Not sure which Ortlieb bags that you have. I have the Ortlieb Classic Plus bags. These use an adjustment track to attach the saddlebag to the mounting mechanism. If you wanted to attach the Arkel hooks to this then it could be a big tricky due to the shape.
Can you describe flimsy? I ask because I'm not sure what specific item you are referring to. If the hooks don't fit snugly on your rack be aware that there are adaptors that allow you to have a tighter fit. They are little plastic inserts that sit inside your hooks. My front bags came with them while the rear bag did not.
Both brands have a very good reputation for reliability, durability and overall quality.

When I mentioned flimsy I was refering to the backing where the hook system attaches to the pannier. These are usually some sort of rigid plastic about 3 to 5mm thick. The Ortleib pannier I looked at seemed to have a very thin piece of plastic where the hook system attached.
BTW, I know that Ortleib makes a lock for their panniers, but it is not available where I am.
Thanks for the help.
