STI Road + Mountain Crank
I've searched the forums some and it seems like you can run a Sugino XD with Shimano STI road brifters. Is it possible to run an XTR crank? What other mountain or at least non road cranks can run with brifters. If I have to I can replace the chainrings on the Ultegra crank, but I'd asoon buy something as do that.

I was told by many that mountain cranks are not compatible with sti. so on my touring bike i run mountain cranks with bar end shifters. But on my cx bike i bought some 'TA' chainrings (26/38/48) for my 105 cranks that work great with my sti brifters and have gearing about half way between standard road (30/42/52) and mountain (22/33/44).

Yes and no.... Front indexed shifters have a different amount that they pull depending on if it's part of the Road or Mt. group. (bar ends for the front you can run in friction mode, and it doesn't matter). You can't use a 105 brifter with an XT FD for example, nor can you run a rapidfire shifter with a 105 FD.
The 105 FD Triple is very forgiving however, and can easily be tuned to work well with a touring crank of 48*36*26 in the case of my C-dale. I have been told that you can get them to work with a full out MTB crank with a 44 tooth chain ring, but you will have to spend some time tuning it. I haven't tried it, so I can't swear it's true. Rivendell bikes has a nice article on setting up the 105 for a touring crank with a 46 ring, you have to break some of the rules for normal setup, but they do know what they are talking about. Rivendell bikes Between them and the info at the Park Tools website I was able to get mine shifting as good as I could imagine. Just be prepared to spend some time tuning, and do it right from the start.
As for rear DR, it doesn't matter, both the Road and Mtn components take the same pull per gear, so the shifters are interchangeable. (unless you have one of the new "rapid rise" RDs, in which case it works, but the shifting pattern is just backward of what you expect)
