Wallingford Bike Store and Katrina

I was wondering if anyone has been able to contact Wallingford Bike. They are located in New Orleans and was concerned if they had survived Katrina.

They're web site says they've headed for the high country. Hope they're ok.

I was wondering the same thing. I've dealt with them a number of times and they are good people. I hope they are okay and they are able to get their business back up and running again soon.

well, i think they are OK (their website says they left before the storm), but lets be honest here, the city is fu55ing destroyed. and with little government funds flowing in and an incompetent FEMA, it's gonna be a long time till they get their shop up again. its a shame, too, i really liked wallingford.

Peter White forwarded this message from Bill Laine to the ibob list:

Hello everyone

Writing to let you all know that wife Erin and myself are safe at
Erin's
folks house in Greenvillle, Alabama. We found a wi-fi cafe here and we
are trying to get started on communication.

We get most of our news about New Orleans on CNN. It looks terrible.
There is a map of the flooded areas on the NY Times site and it looks
like our home/business is still dry. We are on pretty high ground.
There
is no telling what the winds and rain did or what the lawless
atmosphere
has caused. What we know know - the mayor is calling for a complete
evacuation of the city, there is no water, power, sewer service or
communications.

Right now we are just glad to be safe. I talked with Diane on Sunday
morning, before the hurricane hit and she was planning to evacuate to
Nashville. I havn't been able to reach her since. All phones that are
504 (New Orleans area code) based are dysfunctional. We cannot contact
our friends. We did have one message from a friend still in town,
though, and she said that without electricity and communication they
knew nothing about the situation. So we know more than people that are
still in town.

Right now I am not sure how we will get going with Wallbike again.
There
is some need to wait a little for more solid info about the situation
in
New Orleans. The mayor is saying the power could be out for 2 months!
If
that is accurate then I will try to start doing satellite business
wherever we are located. But we just don't know yet.

I know there are a lot of orders in our PayPal account right now. I am
going to start refunding all of those as soon as I can. We go online
for
short periods and then there are other things to attend to. If your
refund doesn't happen right away, please be patient. I will not keep
anybody's money.

If you really need to reach me you can write to bill@thelaines.org. I
am
not using the @wallbike.com mail account because the high volume of
junk
mail that I get there makes a web-interface mail-reading session just
impossible.

So, thanks for all of your good thoughts and please don't forget about
us while we deal with this disruption in our lives.

Regards

Bill Laine

Thanks for posting that status report, Skookum. It's good to hear Bill and his family are OK. Bill's a super guy, at least to do business with. I wish them the best.

NOLA was fu55ed from the getgo.

Sounds like the Wallingford folk were smart enough to bug out, but lets be serious here...

This was a disaster that the "City that Care Forgot" procrastinated over for a hundred years.

Bill is alive and mostly well, albeit disclocated, in Lafayette, La. We are happy to have him. I live in Lafayette and plan to drop by and buy a saddle just because.

Yes, I've been thinking about them. I actually didn't really notice that they were in NOLA until I began shopping for a saddle, after the fact. Now I want to buy one to help support them, instead of going through nashbar or whoever.

I hope they get back up soon!!

According to their website, looks like they are open again on a limited basis. A shop in Lafayette is loaning them some space to work. Looks like they are only handling Brooks and Ortleib for now.
