Aurora 2002 VS Aurora 2005

I am going to be getting a Jamis Aurora and I found a 2002 for $550 new. The Jamis 2005 is is around $800. If it is that much better I dont mind spending the extra money. I checked out the specifications on each model. The frame is made of the 520 on each but the smaller parts are a bit different on each. I am not framilier with the language at all though so I dont really know how much better the parts on the 2005 are. I could get the 2002 and upgrade some parts or not upgrade at all. Or I could just get the 2005.
What do you all think???

hey Paradox

as you see in my sig, I have a 2002 Aurora
it is sort of the 'odd duck' of the recent Aurora model years
They have gone to cantilever brakes since then; 2002 had the Tektro Caliper brakes
For hard core Touring folks, Calipers are frowned upon as they are not thought to be as strong a brake. Also, they tend to be narrower, thus limiting fender installs and really wide tires

The bike I bought started as a raw NOS 2002 Aurora frame and was built up by the seller:

Indexed bar end shifters
Deore Rear deraiileur
8 speeds
tiagra FD
Vuelta Airline wheels
Cyclone Precision crank
the gear cluster is a bit wider than stock, better for touring/hills
Modelo stem/.bars
Brooks B-17 saddle
Speedplay Frog pedals
Blackburn rack
Jandd trunk bag
Nashbar panniers
Planet bike fenders

I use Conti Gator Skin 700/28's. but it might take the next size up
(it came with Hutchinson Flash 28's)

I paid about that much (500) for mine, and I am really happy with it. For the first week, I had to dink around with the fenders to get them to sit right and clear, but they are fine now (fact is, I had to partially assemble the bike so some ticking noises was expected). It's a great frame and rides smooth. 5 bills was my target price. For that much, I almost bought a new Jamis Satellite, but it is more of a road bike with eyelets for a rack, but the clearances are much narrower, limiting to 23-25 tires. I think your bike might have Tiagra, but to be honest, all the raps against Tiagra are mostly from the mouths of road/performance bikers who like nothing less than Ultegra. For commute/tour biking, I think that is a fine system

Down the road, I may even look at the option of brazing on bosses for canti-brakes, or seeing about long reach calipers, but I have no complaints at all.

List the Specs on the 2002 offering and we can give you some opinions... I'm guessing it will be fine, and the best thing to do would be to just get it and ride it and not think about upgrading until you have a couple thousand miles on it
