stupid question about SPD cleats

OK, I just got a pair of Lake Sandals and can't figure out how to put the cleats on. All my shoes before just have holes on the bottom. I figure I have to remove the panel on the bottom, but its not coming out easily at all and don't want to ruin my new shoes. What am I doing wrong?

Try a knife to cut around the panel then pull with pliers. I don't have the sandals but have had three pairs of shoes with covered mounting holes. Good luck!
