Helo boys and girls.
I'm working away here in Kuwait at the moment. All very dull in the main. Starting to think of ridding home at the end of the contract. Sort of route I was thinking of would be;
Saudi
Jordan
Lebanon
Syria
Turkey
Bulgaria
Yugo
Bosnia
Hungry
Austria and the boring EU bit back to Scotland.
If any one has ridden thes countrie has an info etc I would be most welcome.
Happy spinning

No need to go into Iraq. You can stay to the west of it all the way. Big borring road goes down the East of sadi folowwing the Iraq border. They have a pickel up ther arse about security at the moment but you know there is money to be made off of that.

I'd suggest you post a similar question on the "on your bike" branch of the lonely planet thorn tree forum. There are at least folk there that hove cycled in most if not all of the countries you're thinking of.

I was wondering about a saudi visa since I didn't think they did tourist visas, but then I figured you'll know as much as anyone being next door. Which part of sunny Scotland are you returning to?

The big Ed-burg. Finest city in ....... Lothian. And I say that as an Englishman.
Saudi stuff I know a bloke who works in saudi lives in kuwait. He's blar blar director of HR blar blar so may be able to get me a visa but after a point you stat to think what is the point. Its just a queston of ethics. If you want to ride from A to B, you want to ride ALL the way. Or is that just me.
Any way long way off need the cool season next year at least, as a need to do some work for a bit.
Take it easy

I recently had a chat with a true long-distance cyclist. He recently got back from a tour down from Casablanca in Morocco, via the west-coast countries, to the capital of Mali (can't recall the name right now). Before that, he spent two years riding from the very north of Norway, down through eastern and central Europe, on into the middle east, and to Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia (where he was hit in the head by a stone thrown by a kid and was knocked unconcious, which forced him to fly back home and rest for a few months).
He mentioned he really wants to ride through Saudi Arabia, but that non-muslims would never get permission to travel the way he wants to. He said, jokingly, that he considered converting to be allowed through...
But no, his opinion, after checking, was that it can't be done on a bike. The Saudis just wouldn't have it...

Converting is not really an option. At lest for cycle touring. If you convert to Islam and get a signed decliration from your Mosque then you will get a visa. These ate issued on a quote basis for the Hadge. However you are only alowed to go the the places on the hadge plmigrage route and no where else.
Funny old world aint it. Almost like they have something to hide.
The only way I figure you could do it is to go on a buisness visa and just asume that there is a good risk of getting arrested and flung out.
Good effort on your mates part though.
Saudi aside the rest of the route looks good. I may try to transit Saudi by car and cycle the rest. Although you are not the first to tell me stone throwing stories. I have only been stoned once (literal not meteforical) and that was by some Masi in East Africa. I put the bike down and threw stones back which seamed to do the trick.
Have fun
