adding braze-ons later?
is it possible to add braze-ons for a rear rack to a steel frame? or even drill ones out? the latter idea seems like the least likely of the two, but you never know......

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/index.html just installed third water bottle mount on the lower side of the down tube. They don't actually braze on "bosses" I think they installed "helicoils" Not sure about that procedure for where a rear rack would mount. Consider seatpost mount rear rack. Some have pannier rack that attaches to that rear rack

i guess i am wondering if drilling into the drop outs will effect the frames structural integrity. i will be adding a rack for some long distance, loaded touring. are there seatpost mounted racks that can handle heavy loads for long lengths of time?

I had seatpost bosses brazed on at my LBS. It didnt cost much and is rock solid, far better than any P-clamp, 3-point (brake bolt) mounting or seatpost-mounted rack.

I'v brazed 6 mm nuts on top of rear drop outs and regular seat tube brazeons I mounted a rear rack on to these mounts, panniers, and two gal. of water. At this point I put on helmit and extra cloths for a test ride, I new that the frame would crumble because of the brazing damage. that was 5 yrs ago and the frame is still going strong. If you plan to repaint the frame go for it. the heat will ruin the paint..

Go to this site https://www.sjscycles.com/ and look at the way the lugs are done. We have a Thorn and all the lugs are brazed onto the ouside of the tube so it would be easy to do on a existing frame with out effecting it's strength. I could take a photo and post it if you like.

you can get vinyl covered O clamps to fit you seatstays near dropout. sold in pairs in most chain hardwares for 2-3 bucks.
these work fine, but do result in rack being mounted 1-2 inches more forward than conventional mounting point.
