When to buy new tires

I will be leaving on 1000 mile tour (Carmel to Phoenix via San Diego) in a bit over three weeks. The back tire on my bike is almost slick and I need to replace it before starting my tour. My question is when I should replace it. Should I replace it now and roll on it for several weeks (if the rain would ever stop!) to "break it in." Or, should I wait until just before the tour starts to put new rubber on the road.

Also, should I replace the front tire, as well, eventhough it still has plenty of tread on it. I believe the front tire is well over a year old.

Thanks,

Ray

You don't need to break it in. Put it on just before you leave, to maximize the life (and $) of both.

If it's only $20 or so, go ahead and put a new tire on the front, save the old one for your next spare. But a year-old tire with good tread shouldn't give you any problems. The front tire typically lasts twice as long as the rear. Rubber does get "old" but a year isn't much -- unless you store it near electrical motors where ozone can get at it.

You should not begin a long trip with questionable equipment. Replace the tire now.
