Hey I haven't seen it asked out plain so here goes what's your dream tour?

Mine is going from the Mouth of the Mississippi to where it starts then buying a canoe and coming home on the river.......then writing a book about the experience, having Hollywood buy the rights to the movie, ....becoming rich and famous...........oh oh....wow went daydreaming there at the end...sorry

Sunshine, tailwinds, campsites nestled by the side of a stream with mountain views and nobody around (but, of course, a nice cafe/store only a mile away). What else? Ice cream whenever you wish, free Swedish massages at the top of every pass, clothing-optional hot springs - - uh-oh - - I think I'm getting a little carried away here.

I'd like to cycle in every country of the world. I realize that many countries are closed and difficult to get into, but this is a "dream tour", right?



The reality is that I am taking steps right now to make as much of that dream come true.

Wow, this is a dangerous.. er, uh... great question . I haven't done any long tours yet, but I love riding around out in the middle of nowhere and exploring new roads. I am planning to do a multi-month tour this summer on the trans america and northern tier with a couple of week or so tours prior to the big one. If those go well, I think the ultimate tour would be to ride to Alaska, and if I could ride that far, I may just as well turn around and head back down the pacific coast until I get to the southern tip of Chile. And if I could ride that far, etc, etc, etc, etc....

There is just something about arriving in a new place by bicycle. I haven't quite picked out what exactly it is yet that I love about it, but there is definitely something there. I think time must stand still when I'm on a bike or something. You know, that probably is what it is. A bicycle is the closest thing to a time machine that will ever be invented. We are surrounded by cell phones and automobiles and big city concrete jungles and televisions and then you get on your bike, ride for 15 or 25 or 40 minutes and before you know it you are in a place where it's like none of that stuff has even been invented yet.

And then if you stop pedaling and get off your bike, everything is silent. Everytime I stop riding when I'm out in the country, I pause and just soak up as much of the silence as I can before I continue adjusting the brakes, or fishing out the powerbar, or whatever. I love it.

My dream ride is to do the northern tier, pacific coast, the southern tier and back up the atlantic coast all in one ride. Probably take an entire year or so to do it right. Now, that would be a trip!

A ride I'd love to do one day would bring me from Amsterdam to Singapour. Right now the road is a bit difficult due to various political issues but not impossible. For it to be a dream tour, my girlfriend would have to come with me... but even without her it would be a great tour... not sure I can ever do it though but I can always dream about it!

It'll never happen but thats the "fantasy dream" ride. The "reality dream" ride is to cross Canada. Thats gotta wait a few years until I quit.

That's what I was thinking, the entire perimeter of the U.S. except I would leave from home in Denver and head south to the southern tier route and then make the loop around the country and then back up to home. That's a long one so I'll have to just keep on dreaming for now.

I've started collecting little pins from the various places I've been. I put them onto my handlebar bag where I can see them when I ride.

... hire a full time mechanic/soigneur, trainer and nutritionist/chef, then taking them out on the road around the world with me and my wife and eat well, drink some, tour, see the world on our bikes. splendid.

Hey Saltheart--you should check out Jonathan Raban's Old Glory for a mississippi journey book. And if you like reading more about River travel, check out William Least Heat-Moon's River Horse. He did a cross-country trip primarily by river. A little slow reading, but river travel isnt' the fastest anyway!
