You know, the more I think about your story, the more I think this guy might be in serious need of psychiatrical treatment. You did the right thing.

Oh, and you say the tent was in a puddle as the pic shows... what pic? :D The only tent pic is the psycho tent.

I'm a psychiatrist. There are a lot of mentally ill people out there, and certainly this guy is delusional and paranoid. The cotton balls in his ears were probably to try to block out auditory hallucinations. He may be refusing treatment, or maybe he's been treated and it didn't help. Mentally ill persons can come across as very threatening and dangerous, and I suppose sometimes they are, but so are lots of supposedly sane people. In fact on average persons wiith mental illness are no more violent than the rest of us, and on the other hand probably are lot more likely to be victims themselves.
I think mcavana did the right thing...avoided confrontation and gave the guy some space.

Ok, I'm sorry but I'm too darn curious not to ask... Where is your bike? Is it in the tent too??

Anyway, thanks for posting about your experience. I was very entertained :)

The bike is locked up against a pole outside of the picture.

Very nice pictures....
what is that red thing on the handlebar ?

Ok, two things:

1) Re the friendly neighbour: at 5'6" and 135, I think I would pee my pants then cry for mommy...

2) How come I cant seem to get a lot of the pics that are posted here? The pics you posted are just a great big white space. I am on ADSL so no delay there. Some of the pics on some of the posts come through fine but not always. Any Bike Forum nerds out there to offer suggestions.

Other than that, it sounds like you came back pumped and itching for the next, longer tour. Do away with the packaged dehydrated food. It will break the bank. Go with the boring pasta and instant rice. Spice them up and add fresh veggies bought along the way.

Sounds great except...

Another "typical Canadian response" here. I think I would replace loading a gun and going to sleep, with loading my bike and going on my way. I don't think guns belong on bike tours, maybe that's just me.

Lolly,

Yikes! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I use Mozilla as a browser and un-checked an images box in the options and now I have many larger than life pics.

You are such an inspiration to all of us who are sitting here wondering, "why haven't I done that!"

Are you a typical Canadian ?

Don't want to start a debate on the gun thing but please don't suggest your attitude on guns is typical of all Canadians.
I am a Canadian and I can see where a gun could belong on a bike tour.
